John Clayton Wineland

John Clayton Wineland, 88, Overland Park, KS, passed away Friday, June 11, 2004, at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Kansas City, MO. Funeral services will be Monday, June 14, at 10:30 a.m. at the McGilley & Hoge Chapel, Overland Park, KS. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, 701 North 94th St., in Kansas City, KS. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, June 13, at the funeral home. John was born October 31, 1915, in Barber, AR. He was the second of 10 children born to Erasmus Dale and Rosa Lee Hampton Wineland. Survivors are his wife of 63 years, Ruth Spaulding Wineland; son, Thomas Dale Wineland and wife, Michele Draves Wineland, granddaughter, Katherine Rose Wineland, grandson, Thomas Michael Wineland, all of Overland Park; a sister, Geraldine Wineland Macnider and husband, Harold Macnider of Whittier, CA; sister, Atha Jean Wineland Smith of Sebastian, FL; and a brother, Ed Wineland of Greenwood, AR. Prior to moving to Overland Park in 1992, John lived in Herington and Wichita, KS. He was a member of the Wichita United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 171 (now Local 441), retiring in 1980. John was active in and believed in the union. John was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II at Ft. Riley, KS, Ft. Knox, KY, and Ft. Sheridan, IN, in field artillery. After his retirement from pipefitting, John enjoyed his grandchildren, his fruit trees, flowers and vegetable gardening.
