José Belardo Obituary

José Belardo III
June 29, 1966 - September 16, 2022
Lansing, Kansas - Rear Admiral (Ret) José Hernandez Belardo III, 56, peacefully departed this life Friday, Sept. 16, 2022. Born June 29, 1966, in Norfolk, Va., to José Hernandez and Annie (Hawks) Belardo, Jr.
José's brilliance, kindness, and humility made him an affable leader throughout his 26 years of dedicated service to The Commissioned Corps of The United States Public Health Service and The United States Army. A desire to practice global social work led José to transfer his commission to the United States Public Health Service in 1995. Assistant Surgeon General, Rear Admiral José H. Belardo III, retired on September 30, 2016, as Regional Health Administrator (RHA) for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services/Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health/ Region VII.
José is survived by his parents; his wife, Elaine (Moore) Belardo; his children, Lauren Poe (Isaac), Jared Belardo, and Morgan Belardo; his siblings; and a large extended family.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2022, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to The Deeper Window Association (https://thedeeperwindowassociation.org/), which José founded with his wife to advocate for other families facing dementia.

Elaine,

I just found out that Jose´ passed away and that he was battling early onset dementia. My heart is broken for you and your family. I worked with Jose´ on the Let´s Move initiative and he was such a joy. Through the years he offered great counsel to me on professional issues. I will be forever grateful for his wise words and kindness. God bless you and your loved ones. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

My sincerest condolences to the family. I worked with José for a number of years in the Division of Research and Training Branch at the Maternal and Child Health Bureau in Rockville, Maryland. Jose was a friend and a great person to know. May he rest in heavenly peace as his memory lives on in the hearts of us who knew and loved him.

Jose worked with our Healthy Start project in New Orleans many years ago. He stood out because of his compassion and expertise. He was always willing to extend his influence and help us to solve problems. He was loved and will be missed.
