Karen Kaplan Bullard, 60, of Leawood, Kan., went to be with the Lord, Saturday, October 8, 2011, with her family by her side. Karen was born June 9, 1951, to Harvey Allen and Beverly Jeanne Schmitt Kaplan and was raised in the Kansas City area. She married Edward Bullard on Oct. 12, 1991, and together they had one daughter, Olivia Katherine. Her surviving family members include her beloved daughter, Olivia and devoted husband, Ed and their loyal family pet, Dixie; her much loved brother and sister and their families, Robert Allen Kaplan, his son Benjamin and wife Debbie, Kathy Fatall and her son Zach Fatall, daughter, Samantha Fatall and her son, Trey Michael, her loving uncle and aunt, Jerry and Joy Kaplan and family. Karen was a compassionate and faithful believer who enjoyed family, friends, reading, gardening, decorating, travel and service to others. Karen's love for her family's well being was always at the foremost of her thoughts. She loved and cherished her friendships, some of which span more than 30 years. Karen devoted much of her time to such charitable organizations as The Children's Place where she served as president of the Angels of TCP in 2008, and Hope Faith Ministries where she was volunteer of the year in 2009. Karen will be sincerely missed by her family and friends. She will be remembered as a beautiful and gracious woman who inspired others to be the best they can be. In Karen's words, her cancer taught her patience, trust, and God's love for her through the eyes of her friends. Karen's disease did not rob her of her steadfast faith, hope, courage and love for her family and friends, or the inner and stunning physical beauty, which endured even at the end. The family expresses gratitude to Karen and Ed's small group, friends and clergy at Christ Church and the many friends who have supported Karen and her family during her illness. Karen's family will be having a celebration of life service at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Christ Church Anglican, 5500 W. 91st Street, Overland Park, Kan. In lieu of flowers, Karen would most appreciate donations to The Children's Place or Christ Church Anglican for outreach ministries. Arrangements: Cremation Society of KS & MO, 8837 Roe, (913) 383-9888. Fond memories and condolences can be shared with the family at www.kccremation.com Cremation Society of Kansas and Missouri

Dear Kaplan & Bullard family,
Driving down Ward Parkway singing along with the Beach Boys (or whatever was top 10 that week) is how I fondly remember my teenage years, and Karen is always included in those memories. I met her at Bingham and even at 16yrs. could not believe how someone so beautiful inside & out was also so nice! We lost touch after highschool, but I saw her & Olivia a few yrs. back and Karen looked great and Olivia seemed like a wonderful daughter. I am so happy she had a beautiful life. My heart goes out to your family. I lost my husband to cancer 6 months ago and the bittersweet is we miss him so much, but we don't take each other for granted anymore. I believe she is at peace and her spirit will always be with you. May her memory be a blessing. Mary Zemelman Covitz

Ed, Olivia, and family:
Karen and I were classmates at Hale Cook, Bingham, and Southwest as well as Brownie Scouts. I saw her in February when Olivia was taking a night class and she looked the same as she always did...with that wonderful smile. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

It's always tough to loose a loved one at a relatively young age but we can be comforted knowing there is no more suffering where Karen is now. My God grant your family peace over time as you wait to see her again someday.

I will miss my dear sister in Christ. She embodied an inner beauty in the way she loved and treated her family and friends and the selfless way she served so many with her gifts throughout the Kansas City area.

From Bingham to Southwest to the happy reunions there wasn't a more radiant, elegant, full of life, happy, warm, smiling woman I have ever met in my lifetime. Karen was a best friend to me and for me in my youth when I needed one the most. Such a kind and beautiful sole...

May your family be kept peaceful by your memory, you will be sorely missed even buy those of us so many miles away.

Peace be with your family & friends during this trying time...

Karen was a valued and respected (and well-liked!) member of the Southwest High School Class of 1969. I know I will miss seeing her at our next reunion, and I know she contributed greatly to the KC community. She always made a positive impression with her congeniality and friendliness.

Karen and I were schoolmates at both Bingham and Southwest. She was one of the nicest of the girls in school. She had a smile for everyone and was always so very kind. A true stunning beauty outside as well as inside. My thoughts and prayers go out to her beloved family at this time.

To the family of Karen...she was a wonderful classmate from Southwest High School and it was so good to renew our decades-long friendship during our recent 40th class reunion. What a real lady she was and I was proud to know her and call her friend.
