LARRY HICKS Obituary

LARRY HICKS Lawrence Wayne Hicks, of Kansas City, Missouri, died on September 11, 2017. Larry was born in Shenandoah, Iowa, on June 17, 1940 to Racheal Lovitt Hicks and Lawrence Silas Hicks, an officer in the Army Corps of Engineers. After receiving a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Idaho and being named the state's top engineering graduate, Larry performed early laser research for his MS degree at Northwestern University. He went on to earn a JD from Georgetown Law School. After some years as an associate at Breed, Abbott, and Morgan in New York, he joined the law department at Armco Steel in Middletown Ohio. Later he would become that company's Vice President of Research and Development, followed by a stint as President of its Midwestern Steel Division in Kansas City. Larry then served as CEO of Lone Star Steel and Acme Steel before buying and operating manufacturing and precision inspection companies in Kansas City. He then became a management and information technology consultant. After a brief period of retirement, he took a job developing software for the University of Kansas Medical Center. Outside of work, he had been active as a Boy Scout leader, a board member of an organization that designed handicap-accessible tools, and, for the last 30 years, an invaluable supporter of the Friends of Chamber Music of Kansas City. Larry is survived by his wife, Cynthia Siebert of Kansas City, his two sons, Andrew and Matthew, brothers Rick and Don, and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at All Souls Unitarian Church on Friday, November 10th at 11:00 am with a reception following at a location to be determined.

Our family extends our sincere wishes for the peace that comes from remembering your shared experiences. We valued the time we had with Larry, around the neighborhood and on the Medical Center Campus. We marvel at the richness of his life and how little we knew about his past, even his home State of Iowa. May the grace of God heal the emptiness you are feeling and help you keep the memory of Larry alive in a way that enriches your lives.
