LAWRENCE D. TIMMONS

1922 - 2013

Lawrence D. Timmons, 91, formerly of Kansas City, MO, died unexpectedly at his home in Emporia, KS on Thursday, October 24, 2013. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 2, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church, 823 Merchant St., Emporia, KS, with inurnment to follow at a future date next to his loving wife of 67 years at Pine Hill Cemetery in Davenport, IA. Larry was born June 22, 1922, in Trenton, MO to James H. and Sylvia Edith Timmons and spent much of his early years in Trenton, MO, Geneseo, IL, and Davenport, IA. He met his future wife Margaret in Davenport while he was working at the Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island, IL, as a drill press operator, and they were married in Davenport on June 28, 1942. Larry served in the Navy during World War II from 1944-46, and then again in 1950-52 during the Korean Conflict. Larry and Margaret settled in Kansas City, MO after he was discharged from the Navy in 1946. Larry subsequently went to work as a tool and die maker/tool engineer for Bendix Corporation in 1950, where he was employed for 17 years. In 1967 Larry and Margaret moved to Emporia, KS, where Larry worked for 18 years as a manufacturing engineer and head of the custom design department for Didde- Glaser Corporation, retiring in 1984. After settling in Emporia, Larry and Margaret joined First United Methodist Church and became active in the life of the church and the Emporia community. Besides the church, Larry was especially active in Kiwanis, V.F.W. Post 7957, Camera Club, Outlook Club, Emporia All Veterans Memorial, Habitat for Humanity, and tutoring of elementary school kids. Traveling all over the world was a special passion of Larry and Margaret, as well as sharing experiences with family and friends. Larry was preceded in death by Margaret in August of 2009, but he continued to actively serve in his church and community. As an 89- year-old in 2011, a tour of Israel was particularly meaningful for him. Larry is survived by his son Stephen Timmons and wife Suzanne of Overland Park, KS; his daughter Sandra Timmons of Emporia and St Petersburg, Fl; sister Mary Sue Wade and her husband Milie of Emporia; four grandsons; four great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family is in charge of final arrangements.
