Lenora Collins Hicks
January 1, 2023
Kansas City, Missouri - Lenora Collins Hicks, age 97, died January 1, 2023, at Timberlake Care Center, where she had been a resident for more than five years. She was fun loving and enjoyed life to the fullest. She was adored by her family, friends and will be greatly missed. Lenora was born August 22, 1925, in Shreveport, Louisiana to Tosie and Rosa Collins. Both parents and brother Tosie Collins Jr. preceded her in death.
Lenora was a graduate of Central High School. She worked as the head clerk at the Kroger Store. She was the first Black person hired as a clerk in the Greater Kansas City area. She volunteered with many organizations. Served as the first PTA president of the old DA Holmes school. She was a member of the Urban League Guild and the Satellite Club serving both organizations as treasurer. She was a long-time and faithful member of Ward Chapel AME Church before joining Allen Chapel AME Church under the pastorate of Rev. Alvin L. Smith. She truly loved her church and served as a class leader, steward, and treasurer until her illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband James E. Hicks Sr. of 62 years. Left to cherish her loving memory and celebrate her life are her sons James E. Hicks Jr. of the city and Michael E. Hicks (Linda) of Evans, Georgia: four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and a great, great grandchild and a host of friends and her church families.
Celebration Service will be Saturday, January 14, 2023, visitation 11:00 AM-12:00 PM, service at 12:00 PM.; held at Ward Chapel/Cain-Grant A.M.E. Church, 2126 Prospect Ave., Kansas City, Missouri 64127. Reverend Carmine Woods, Officiating.
