Without Marilyn Carbonell, I never would have received my M.A. in Art History from UMKC. She was chief librarian then, in 1980, and in those dark days, before computers, one's thesis had to be typed according to an exact formula. One mistake and your thesis would not be accepted. I kept flubbing margins here and there, and at one point I broke into tears in the library. Marilyn, being the soul of kindness, rescued me and somehow got me through the entire process. And yet, whenever we talked after that time, she treated me as an equal, always complementing me on my writing and asking how I was. Of course she was like this with everyone. Marilyn, I loved you and you are gone way too soon.

Marilyn and I were close friends during graduate school and shared a house in Iowa City. She was a loving and generous friend who nursed me through my graduate dissertation. I doubt I could have gotten through it without her brilliant, patient and meticulous guidance. I am so sorry for her passing.
