Dr. Charles was a wonderful, caring and sharing person, who never made one feel "less than". He treated people exactly the way he would have wanted to be treated. He was always the "Professor." He will be missed but never forgotten. May we all be better persons for just knowing this great man.

I just want to say THANK YOU to Professor Charles who always offered me 'a county girl in the world of big city music' words of encouragement and praise whenever I had the opportunity to be a part of his musical world. A truly beautiful and gracious musician leading the choir in a much better place now. Doris Owens

Dr. Michael Charles and I grew up in a very economically challenged area, referred to as the "East End." Some of you may be familiar with the area. Though our lives would take different career paths - his would be education/music, mine would be the federal government, we would intersect from time to time. It would never matter when or where I would see Mike, he would always extend his friendship and love to me and my family, and I to his.
To Michael's family: May God's love strengthen and sustain you with beautiful memories of such a gracious, talented, and loving human being.

With Our Condolences,
Robbie Herndon and Family

A TRIBUTE TO OUR BELOVED MICHAEL LEE CHARLES: WE LOVE U AND WE MISS U. HE TOUCHED EVERYBODY' LIFE. HE WOULD COME OVER TO ST. STEPHEN B.C. REGULARLY AND PLAY PIANO FOR BARBARA WATSON. HE WORKED WITH THE LATE, GREAT DORIS BRIDGEWATER. IT WAS ALWAYS A JOY TO SEE HIM SINGING WITH BARBARA, JACKIE AND DORIS!!! THEY USED TO BRING THE HOUSE DOWN!!! HE ASKED ME TO BE CO-DIRECTOR OF THE 500 VOICE SCLC CHOIR, ALONG WITH DORIS JOHNSON AT THE MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM! IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL EVENT! MICHAEL DIRECTED SEVERAL SONGS! HE WAS AT HIS BEST AS ALWAYS! HE ALSO ASKED ME TO SING "GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS" AT CROWN CENTER FOR A SCLC CHOIR ENGAGEMENT! HE BROUGHT OUT THE BEST IN ME! HE ALWAYS BROUGHT OUT THE BEST IN PEOPLE!!! HE WILL BE SORELY MISSED.
I REMEMBER SONGS LIKE: "FREEDOM AFTERWHILE, "RAY OF HOPE," "EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT," "IN HIS ARMS," "WHO IS HE," AND SO MANY OTHERS
WE LOVE U MICHAEL!!! WE MISS U!!!

I truly give thanks to God for His blessing of sharing Professor Dr. Michael L. Charles with me.
I have truly been blessed and inspired to have known him. He expressed his love of God in his never ending service to others, and his willingness to obey His word.
I've known Michael since Kansas City began to recognize him as a great gospel artist, musician, singer, composer, director and educator. He has been my mentor, my brother and my very close friend through the years. Having had the honor of singing in several groups, and choirs that he had organized, I've had the pleasure, just as many others have had, of traveling both across country and abroad with him.
Michael you will surely be missed...
but you are now "Safe In The Masters Arms" Amen.

Another soldier for the Lord has gone. The Kansas City area appreciate the love and commitment that Dr. Michael Charles gave unselfishly to the KC community. We will truly miss his wonderful spirituals at the Martin Luther King Celebrations (Freedom Afterwhile and We Shall Overcome). Our MLK celebrations will never be the same without Dr. Michael Charles' presence. Rest from your work here on earth. Great is your reward in heaven. God's Blessings upon the family in this time of sorrow.

Dr. Michael Charles was one of the greatest gospel musicians of this century. He will be greatly missed. He was also a great teacher. He was my second grade teacher in the Kansas City School district at Meservey Elementary School. I also had the great and distinct pleasure of singing in the MSCC choir under his direction. It was through him that I learned that God has NOT given us the spirit of fear.....His spirit will definitely live on.....

Another soldier is gone. The Kansas City Missouri area have lost a great icon. Dr. Michael Charles brought so much love and spiritual zest to the Martin Luther King (MLK) celebration. Our MLK celebrations will never be the same without the icing on the cake with Dr. Charles' spirituals (Freedom Afterwhile, We Shall Overcome). Rest from your work on earth. You have earned your crown for your continuous commitment and support to all of us here in Kansas City. God's Blessing upon the family.

Kansas City and the World, has lost the Master of Music. I don't think there's anyone with greater knowledge of Gospel Music and the Music of Praise & Worship. As a former member of "The Michael Charles Singers", I learned so much from Michael. He treated us (3 girls) like his little sisters. Being the newbie and the youngest in the group at the time, I felt a little spoiled. When he asked me to do leads on our record, "I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say", and I'm Gonna Wait on Jesus", I felt so blessed. I remember being in his apartment for rehearsals, and he'd tell us to take a quick break because God had placed a song in his heart to write at that moment. Though we hadn't seen each other for awhile, I'm going to miss Michael, but there's comfort in knowing he's in the great hands of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. To the family; God knew you loved him, but He loved Professor Dr. Michael L.Charles more.
