Michael Wayne Smith was born March 19, 1949 in Kansas City, MO to Bobby L Smith (deceased 2010) and Erma L. Ballard (Smith) (deceased 2003).
A beloved Son, Brother, Uncle and Dear friend to all of us. He grew up in a loving family with 2 Sisters and a Niece who Loved him Dearly; Jo Ann James (Smith) 'Sissy' (Surprise, AZ), Linda L Smith (Sister-deceased 2003) and Allison R Holmes (Niece-Lake Tapawingo, MO).
'Mike-A-Boy' was his nickname growing up. Being Developmentally Disabled, there were many things he could not do; however, the things he Could do were very Inspiring. He could not Talk; but was the most communicative, He could not prepare a Meal; but had the healthiest appetite, He could not Run; but loved to go places. His Smile; Heartwarming, His Eyes; the Brightest Blue, His Touch; the Softest, His Will to Learn and Accomplish Tasks; Empowering. Mike-A-Boy enjoyed looking at magazines and being read to, he loved his Mom's home cooked meals and car rides with his Dad. Mike-A-Boy's passion was Classic Country Music, and his favorite musician was Johnny Cash. The hobby he loved the most was playing his Records on his record player. He was able to choose the Johnny Cash record he wanted to hear by the color of the label. From the time he was a young boy we all spent time with him enjoying listening to his records; he would walk out of his room to come get each of us, 1 at a time, to walk back to his room and listen to his records with him; which was always a special time to spend together. Some of his favorite songs were; San Quentin, Folsom Prison Blues, Wanted Man, Hey Porter, If I Were a Carpenter, and many, many more songs and artists of this era.
In 1998 Mikey entered the Center for Developmentally Disabled (CDD-KC) organization and his home was at Kinbrook Apartments. He had a very fulfilling life here and enjoyed a number of trips and outings he got to take with his friends, caregivers and staff over the years. A number of caregivers, friends and staff were an intricate part of Mikey's family he loved dearly; Sarah, Shirley, Connie, Beth, Nnenna, Dominic, Rose, Lavern, Bertha, Sharon, Joyce, Lillie, Chelsea, Royce, Andrew and Jen.
