Myra Morgan Obituary

Myra J. Morgan, 67, passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2005, after a lengthy battle with lung cancer. A Memorial Service will be held on May 21, at 11 a.m., at the Belger Arts Center, 2100 Walnut St., KC, MO. Myra was born in Sterrett, AL, studied art history at the University of Alabama and moved to Kansas City in 1965. She founded the Morgan Gallery in 1969, in a one-car garage near the intersection of 47th and Holly Streets. The gallery was an immediate success and operated out of more spacious environs over the next 30 years. Myra's husband, Jim, helped with the gallery operations before passing away in 1982. Myra overcame this setback and continued with a curatorial career that spanned 35 years. On April 21, 2005, the Jackson County Executive's Office issued a proclamation declaring Myra the "Godmother of the Kansas City Art Gallery Scene." Over her career, Myra curated exhibitions by more than 200 artists, including such luminaries as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. Myra also gave shows to artists who were lesser known at the time but went on to remarkable careers, such as Chuck Close, Chris Burden, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Duane Hanson, Richard Estes and Robert Cottingham. She accomplished this by developing working relationships with several New York City gallery owners, among them Leo Castelli, Ivan Karp and Louie Meisel. Her career was also enhanced by a very strong and supportive group of Kansas City collectors. Through the years, Myra influenced the Kansas City art scene in many ways. She was a founding member of the Contemporary Art Society and a major booster of the city's One Percent for Art Program. In 1999, Myra retired from the Morgan Gallery, passing the business on to her son, Dennis. Myra then joined forces with Kansas City's Belger family to launch the Belger Arts Center For Creative Studies. She was the director of the BAC when she passed away. Under Myra's direction, the BAC has hosted more than a dozen large exhibitions and provided performance and event space for the Musical Theater Heritage group and many other arts organizations in the region. In addition to collecting a formidable selection of contemporary art, Myra, the granddaughter of a studio potter, also left behind a museum-quality collection of art pottery. Over the years the Morgan gallery hosted exhibitions by many of America's most famous ceramic artists, including Ken Ferguson, Peter Voulkos and Robert Arneson. Myra is survived by her life partner, Dick Belger; two brothers, Don and Jerry Dennis of Birmingham, AL; a daughter, Denise Milton (husband, Doug) of Jasper, TX; two sons. J.P. Morgan (wife, Wendy) of El Segundo, CA, and Dennis (wife, Nancy) of Prairie Village, KS; and grandchildren, Elizabeth, Lucas, Peter, Nicholas and Henry Morgan. In lieu of flowers, the family recommends contributions to the Belger Arts Center, the American Cancer Society or Crossroads Hospice.

Dear Dennis:

My Mom sent me the great article about your Mom, I received it yesterday. She really did so much for the art community. Having the Morgans as a part of my childhood and early adulthood was a unique priviledge. Your Mother was always very nice and polite to me when I would visit. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Bob, Susie, Danny, and Brett.

For KCAI students in the 1970s, the Morgan Gallery was a major destination for contemporary art. I remember seeing all kinds of works there. Myra and Jim showed student works and emerging artists as well as nationally prominent artists. I felt welcome there. The atmosphere was relaxed yet also very serious - serious about the experience of being with and looking at contemporary art.

Myra’s passion for art was evident when I returned to Kansas City in the 1990s. Thanks to her and others like her from the early days, Kansas City’s enthusiasm for art has evolved into a multifaceted, vital, and diverse arts community. Myra’s continued work at the Morgan Gallery, and more recently, the numerous exhibitions she curated at the Belger Arts Center, are a testament to her sustained desire, for over three decades, to support working artists and to bring the experience of their imaginations to the citizens of Kansas City.

When I was in Kansas City in spring 1996 to interview for my job at KCAI, I was eating with Victor Babu and Warren Rosser at The Classic Cup in Westport. Myra was having a meal there as well and she stopped by the table to tell me that I would be offered the job - she said she “just knew it”!

Sure enough four years later, when NCECA decided to come to Kansas City for their 2002 conference, Myra was one of the first to say “let me help you”. Working with Myra to plan the New Territory exhibit was a wonderful experience. Her support and expertise in helping plan this show was a gift for me. I feel really lucky that I got to know her so well during this time period. And I feel equally lucky that Myra called Mo last fall to come work at the Belger. She knew just what she was doing, didn’t she? I heard great stories every evening this year from Mo about Myra’s latest projects and views on the world. She meant a whole lot to him.

It’s hard to say goodbye. But I have the most wonderful memories, and one of the last times I saw Myra was when she arrived at the Morgan gallery’s first opening at Tracy this spring. Myra wore a red silk jacket as she made a grand entrance from the elevator on a Belger cart, sitting on a spit polished aluminum step ladder! What a vision, what a visionary!

Dick, Dennis, Dink, and Missy - my thoughts are with you. Your partner and mother, was a very grand person. I was lucky to know her.

The Morgan Family,

My husband at the time and I lived in Prairie Village from 1967 to 1972 and knew your parents very well. As a matter of fact we really enjoyed your Fathers' light paintings. My ex worked with your Father at TWA and we were sorry when we lost him as well. You are left with a legacy left by your Mother and I am sure you will continue in her foot steps Dennis.

God bless and keep you all.

Dennis,

Our condolences to you and your family. Vicki and I remember grilling steak's out on your parent's patio. We loved touring the Morgan home since there were so many great contemporary art objects to view. My Dad who at the time owned the L'omega Gallery thought your folk's had some of the most unique offering he had ever seen.

Myra was a blessing in my life. She could be tough as nails but at the same time compasionate and loving. I hope that some day I can share some of the hope and kindness that she gave to me. She would always tell me when I was going through a difficult time in life, "It will get better, one day at a time." I am just grateful to have had the priviledge of her friendship. We will all miss her.
