PAUL COTHERN Obituary

Paul D. Cothern Jr. "Bud" age 85, died peacefully at his home in Olathe, Kansas on Christmas Eve December 24, 2012, after celebrating the holiday with family. Born in Pana, Illinois on 27 November 1927, Bud was the youngest of Paul D. Cothern and Addie (Potts) Cothern's three children. He was active in the Boy Scouts, a member of the Order of the Arrow, and became an Eagle Scout in 1941. Bud attended school in Pana where he participated in athletics and was elected to the National Honor Society, graduating in 1945. After high school, Bud attended Beloit College and continued his athletic pursuits as the starting quarterback for the varsity football squad and he also played basketball as a freshman. He graduated from Officer Candidate School in 1952 as an Artillery 2nd lieutenant. He graduated from the United States Army Command and General Staff College and was selected by the Pentagon to organize, train, and lead the 1st Battalion, 82nd Artillery in Vietnam, where he earned the Legion of Merit, the Air Medal and 4 battle stars on his Vietnam service medal. He retired from the United States Army in 1972 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Bud wedded Betty Jo Kloever in 1952 and they were married for 50 years until she died on Thanksgiving Day in 2002. Surviving are his son Michael Eugene Cothern and wife Cathy, of Swampscott, Ma.; his daughter Michele Ann Gaston (Shelly Cothern) and husband Eric, of Olathe, Ks.; and four grandchildren; Thomas and Christopher Cothern of Swampscott, Ma. and Casey and Samuel Gaston, of Olathe Ks. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two sisters, and a son who died shortly after childbirth. A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 4, 2013 at 11:00 am at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 14275 S Blackbob, Olathe, KS with the family receiving friends an hour prior to service time. To the Cothern Family -
I am an admirer of Col Cothern. I was assigned to the 1/82d Arty in 1968, arriving at Ft. Lewis on New Years Day. As his S-3 Operation Officer, I joined a couple 2/Lts in a little room with piles of field manuals. We all activated the new battalion, trained them, and even were ready to go to Chicago via C-5A's to face the demonstrations. We even had to train for and pass a TPI in order to be ready to fire nukes in Vietnam if necessary. Col Cothern was a kind, direct, dedicated leader. He trusted us to do the job right.
My wife Jan gave birth a week before we left. A couple weeks later we landed in Chu Lai and we organized our perimeter and started firing within days. Unfortunately, I was reassigned to the Americal Division HQ a month later to serve with Major Colin Powell. Under Col Cothern's leadership, we were an exceptional battalion. He will be remembered by many artilleymen! God bless.

I got to know Paul when his son Mike (Sport) was in the Navy. Jill and I would go over to the house to see Cuz and take him out for a night on the town; but more than once we never made it out of the house. We would visit with Paul and Betty Jo and before we knew it we were in the basement having a couple bottles of Paul's homemade beer and listening to old Bob Newhart records. It was great and I really enjoyed being with family.
My symapthy to you, Mike and Shelly, you are in my prayers. Your Dad will be missed. Frank

I am grateful for the life of Mr. Cothern. Thanks to his service and to the service of others in our armed forces, my family and I have been able to lead our lives in freedom and peace.
