Paul Richards Obituary

Paul Alan Richards

September 17, 1954 - February 21, 2024

Leawood, Kansas - Several years ago, Paul drafted his own obituary:

Paul Alan Richards, 69, Leawood, Kansas, will no longer be available for social or sporting events. His unexpected and untimely demise occurred on February 21 in London.

The second son of Frank and Virginia Richards, Paul inherited his father's methodical and quiet approach, with his mother's zest for adventure. The fact that Paul became a success in his chosen career was no doubt a pleasant surprise to both of his parents.

Paul's older sibling, Don Richards, was always the best brother, with fond memories of playing on the grandparent's farm in Wichita. His younger sister, Linda Wolford, was the perfect foil for sibling rivalry.

Two lifelong friends, Jay Raccuglia and Robert Edwards, would be trusted comrades-in-arms as they marched through the highs and lows of childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Paul's favorite hangout growing up was the kitchen table of Mary and Bruce Terril - playing cards, drinking beer and discussing life. Every kid should have such a getaway.

Paul grew up in Prairie Village, Kansas, and like so many liberal Kansans, spent his life trying to escape his native state's Neanderthal conservatism. Education proved to be the key. Thanks to his parent's expectations and the preparation of a wonderful public education, Paul graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Education and later a Masters Degree in American History.

A special thanks to the University of Kansas where professors showed a parochial Johnson County youth the vast complex world outside of the insulated conservatism of Kansas. The intellectual liberation provided by KU was the most fundamental element in Paul's development.

From there, Paul spent 34 years as a teacher in the Olathe School District, first dealing with the hormonal explosions of seventh graders to teaching AP American History to high school juniors.

Nothing was more satisfying professionally to Paul than to see his students succeed in the classroom. Paul sought to instill in his students a love of history and its importance in examining current events. At this time Paul found his last lifelong friend, Richard Luckert. Richard was an incomparable friend throughout this time period, a steadfast ally in surviving the daily battles of public education and the travails of adult life.

Paul had many hobbies. He was an avid reader-mostly history. However, he would mention the influence of P.G. Wodehouse for highlighting the frivolity of social interactions and Joseph Heller for preparing him for the absurdity of life. He was an active sports enthusiast. Biking was also a passion with two trips across Wyoming with Richard Luckert (those trips became more legendary as they grew older). Not a gifted athlete, Paul was a firm believer in the power of practice and persistence.

Aside from sports and reading, Paul had wonderfully eclectic taste in music - from Mongolian throat singing to The Beatles to Sinatra to Brahms to Miles Davis - you never knew what Paul would play for you. A lover of film, Paul was an avid movie and tv enthusiast. His knowledge of both was always an amazement to his wife. His acquaintance with John Steed of the British tv show The Avengers at an early age set a model of decorum that followed him throughout life (a gentleman is never without his bowler hat and umbrella).

Finally, and most significantly, Paul leaves behind his beautiful wife, Joyce. His heart was taken by her at first glance ("ring-a-ding-ding"). For 38 years he was forever lucky that she walked into his life. He never grew tired of making her laugh and was despondent when he made her sad. Her wit, sense of style, and wisdom were always an inspiration to do what was needed-what was right. The love of his life. That she put up with him is still a mystery. Over their marriage Paul and Joyce were the proud parents to four collies, Clio, Benny, Noah and Gracie. Nothing can compare to the unconditional love these dogs gave every day. No parent could have loved or been more proud of their kids.

The happy end of Paul's story was going to be permanently escaping the conservative confines of Kansas for the Blue state of Hawaii. In Hilo, Maui and Oahu, Paul loved to spend endless days walking on the beach, watching the palm trees sway and staring out into the blue Pacific. Layers of clothing and boots would give way to Hawaiian shirts and shorts.

Paul will be forever grateful- he had a wonderful life filled with great experiences, fast friends and a loving family. Who could ask for more?

Paul's ashes will be released into the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii. If you feel compelled to remember Paul's life, please make a donation to collie rescue, your local dog shelter, the ASPCA, or the Democratic Party.

My girlfriend and I took his history classes in high school. We credit his choice of Howard Zinn's history of America as a defining book that helped change our view of our country, and break out of a lot of propagandized stereotypes of history. His zeal and story telling prowess was so memorable that history was easy to contextualize and remember. I cannot express enough of how often I think back to his early intervention into our worldview, and we pledge a lot of our current sanity and political literacy from the seeds he planted. I wish I could of properly thanked him, but he will live on each time I remember to say his name. GNU Mr. Richards

Mr. Richards was one of those rare individuals who you encounter in life whose zeal for learning is truly contagious and wisdom is truly mesmerizing. Having never really been a history buff myself, his class gave me an appreciation for history that still resonates with me to this day. What really brought his class to life for me were his "flow sheets" that he would draw on the board every day to connect various events in history, which made his class feel more like a sociology course--allowing you to understand the downstream ramifications of historical decisions and see how everything is connected, rather than treating each event in isolation. His lectures felt more like performances than history lessons. Mr. Richards had a huge impact on my educational experience in high school, and I am very grateful that our paths crossed in this life.

I had Mr. Richards-as I knew him- for AP U.S. history as a junior in 2012 / 2013. I can honestly say that without that class, and in particular the final research paper, I don´t know if I would have had the research and writing experience to prepare me for college (also at the University of Kansas, Rock Chalk!) and eventually law school. And I can honestly say that before that class, I had never been so inspired or challenged intellectually. In particular, I remember sitting there during an hour-long lecture on Gettysburg, conducted entirely without notes, and just thinking this is better than the movies. Mr. Richards´s lectures were right up there with the best of any college or law school professor I had. His enthusiasm was palpable, and many of the life lessons I learned in that class stick with me to this day. I have long thought that after I finish my career in law, I hope to have a second career in education-so that I can have the same effect on at least one student´s life that Mr. Richards had on mine.

Like many others have stated, Mr. Richards was truly one of the best teachers I was lucky enough to have. I´ve recently been thinking how amazing it is That back when I was a junior in 2003 We had a history teacher that was actually Educating us in the way the world was and is. How many others got to read Howard Zinn and learn the interconnectedness of all of history through amazing flow charts?? I ended up majoring in history in college and no doubt my world view was thankfully shaped in such a profound way through his teaching and kindness. I had been wanting to find him and tell him thank you. Incredibly sad at this news and thinking of his wife, family and friends and of course Mr. Luckert.

I was on the debate team at East and spent a lot of time working on arguments, but it was Mr. Richards who taught me the importance of telling a story and arguing persuasively to your audience, particularly in your written work. His high expectations for me and belief in my potential led me to law school and a career in public service. He was a great teacher and a great person, and I will forever be thankful I had the good fortune to be one his students.

Mr. Richards was my AP history teacher at Olathe East and his friend Mr. Luckert was my English teacher. They were always hanging out together enjoying each other´s company. Both were amazing teachers and I am so fortunate to have been taught by them. Mr. Richards shared my interest in old black and white movies. He introduced me to The Bishop´s Wife, which I watch every Christmas and think of him. I´m so glad to hear he was able to spend time in Hawaii. What a special person who gave so much to the world and us impressionable high school students. He will be greatly missed.

I met Paul at Olathe East and was privileged to work with him for many years. I was one of those conservative Kansans that he was always fussing about. He and I had many interesting conversations that never got personal and I was always delighted to participate in with him. Paul, you would be surprised to hear that my thoughts have moved much closer to yours in the last few years. Joyce, I am so sorry for your loss, rest in peace Paul. Jim Mowry

Absolutely one of my favorite teachers. His wit and patience were unmatched and it was a thrill to write anything he found insightful or entertaining. He was also the only teacher who took the time to recommend music to me (and he wasn't kidding, his suggestions were varied and unique) and I always came away from our conversations feeling seen. Although hundreds of students probably crossed his path, I imagine that all of us felt like he really listened and saw us, and that was simply priceless. What a gift to have been able to learn from such a special human.

Mr. Richards had a way of connecting with every student that passed through his class. I took two classes from him and student-taught under him. His true genius was in using story to capture students. It didn´t matter if he was lecturing to an AP class or a group of Sophomores that didn´t give a rip about history. He brought everybody into the world that he was creating through his words. Every time I lecture in front on my classes today, Paul is speaking through me and my students get to experience the impact that Mr. Richards had.

His class was always my favorite. It wasn't the easy class, but it was the most interesting. Joyce, I remember him telling us that if he came to school with scratches on his face it was because of your collie. According to him it was you who convinced him that it would be OK for the puppy to sleep in bed with you to calm her down. He clearly had a soft spot for those dogs and loved you. I hope you know he had an impact on more people than he thought.

Like many others, Mr. Richards was influential in my life through his AP American History class at Olathe East and was, from what I recall, the first teacher to introduce history as more than a memorization of people, places, and dates, but more closer to an unfolding drama. His high expectations of high school juniors was instrumental to my own growth as a student.

Most importantly, he transformed my like of reading into a love of reading by slipping me a book each time I finished a test a little early to leaf through for the rest of the class period.

Gone too soon.

Joyce I am unsure if you will read this, but please know Paul was one of the single most influential people in my life. Now the mom of a 17 year old junior, I often refer to his presence and lessons as the moments that stick with me the most. He believed in me when I didn´t believe in myself. Thank you for sharing him with us.

I am so sorry Joyce! Paul was such a precious friend to me!He had such wonderful wit! I am very saddened by his loss and my prayers are with you! Paul and I met in Mrs. Grove's high school English class. He sat in front of me in class. When I did not understand something, I would poke him in the back with my pencil to ask him to explain. Finally he turned around one day and said his mother would appreciate me to stop poking him with my pencil in his back because it was putting holes in his shirt! I was shocked and then laughed! We have been friends ever since! Peace be with you Paul!

I can´t imagine my teaching career without my good friend Paul. I was him for 30 years. He talked me off the ledge many times in his room after school and inspired me to continue to challenge my students for their future good. One of my favorite retirement memories last year was going out to lunch with him, Tom, Nate, Breanna and Caine, All my favorite teachers at east. Rest easy Paul! You deserve a special place in heaven.
