Richard Hause Obituary

Richard G. Hause, 73, died suddenly Sunday afternoon at his home in Estes Park, CO. He was born May 5, 1932, to Jesse and Evelyn Hause on the family farm near Fort Lupton where the Hause family had homesteaded in the 1800's. He graduated from Brighton High School in 1950 and received bachelor's and master's degrees in secondary education from the University of Northern Colorado (then Colorado State College of Education). After teaching in the Kern County Schools in Bakersfield, CA, he went back to school at the University of Colorado, where he earned an Ed.D. degree. He became an assistant professor of education at Kansas State University, Manhattan, in 1966, becoming a full professor and department head during his tenure there. He was a member of numerous professional organizations including Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Delta Kappa, and Kansas Association of Teachers of English, of which he was state president. He was honored with several awards for outstanding teaching and received an outstanding alumni award from UNC in 1974. Upon his retirement the Bluemont Bell, Kansas State's original school bell, was placed outside the College of Education Building in his honor. The College also created the Richard Hause Creativity lecture series, featuring Kansas' Outstanding Teachers of the Year held every October since his retirement in 1996. In Estes Park he was past president of the noon Rotary Club and was currently serving as Rotary Club Foundation President. He was a member of the St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church where he was a choir member and part time organist. He had been a member of the Estes Park Museum Board and on the board of the Colorado Episcopal Cursillo. He served as a consultant to several other local organizations. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy, of the home in Estes Park; four children, Janie and husband, Ken Shepard, of Elk Grove, CA, Lesley Hause of Kansas City, MO, Andrew Hause and wife, Ann, of Lawrence, KS, and Lauren Butler, of Parkville, MO; and five grandchildren.
