Robert Ellinger Obituary

Bob Ellinger passed peacefully from this life to the next early on October 10, 2009, surrounded by his family at his home in Dallas, Texas. Bob was born Sept. 1, 1925, in Kansas City, Mo., the sixth of seven children to Morris and Nora Ellinger. He grew up in Kansas City, attended Rockhurst Jesuit High School, and then served his country in the Navy during World War II aboard the battleship USS California. In 1931, at age six, Bob met the love of his life, Pat Donegan. Friends throughout their school years, they met up again after WWII - and married Nov. 23, 1946. Together they raised and educated six daughters. Along with Pat, his wife of 63 years, he is survived by his daughters and their spouses, Maureen and Mike Farmer, Lynn and Larry Tramel, Joan and Jim Bertucci, Denise and Michael Moran, Elaine Starr and Kevin Backmann, and Barbara and Roy Jacobs. He is survived by 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great great-granddaughter. Bob's sister, Therese Aue, Liberty Mo., survives him along with numerous nieces and nephews, many loving friends, colleagues and fellow volunteers. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Morris and Nora; siblings, Maurice Ellinger, Loretta Stacy, Mary Tungett, Jane Corrigan, and Virginia Lafferty. Bob was a man of service to others his whole life; and a man of faith. Early on he was involved in his church and with civic groups in Kansas City. He was a councilmember for the city of Fairway in the late 50's, an active Kiwanis member, and leader for church organizations. The family moved to Dallas in 1963 where he continued his volunteer activities. Always the teacher, he performed his greatest teaching lesson for us these past few weeks by being brave, thankful, gracious and leaving with dignity! A rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, followed by visitation, at the Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, 7405 W. Northwest Hwy., Dallas, TX 75225 Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 6306 Kenwood, Dallas TX 75214. Bob's 12 grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Baylor Foundation/Caring Hearts, 3600 Gaston Ave., Dallas, TX 75246 or Benedictine Mission House, PO Box 528, Schuyler NE 68661.

Dear Elaine, Erin, Dan, Pat, & family:
I just heard about Bob's passing as I learned of Kevin's death. I remember Bob sitting with my family at Baylor on the day of my Daddy's quadruple bypass. It wasn't even his day to volunteer, but he came to hold my hand. That's the way Bob was...I'll miss running into him at the Tom Thumb. Although I rarely shop there anymore, it never failed that Bob would be coming as I was leaving, or vice versa when I just ran in for a quick item. I know the sorrow that comes from multiple deaths so closely together, & I pray for you to have strength and courage.
Love and kindest thoughts,
Judy

MY dear friend Bob, I am somewhat behind in writing to you, but you'vs been in my thoughts and prayers through your last days and after. You were the best neighbor and friend to me and as I always said, I thought of you as my surrogate father since mine passed away so young. I shall miss your laughter, stories about your office supply days (and more) and the beautiful pears you would hand deliver to my door while I lived across the street. Rest well my friend, I'll see you again. Suzanne Sawyer (Gladys)

Dad, who is going to call me and tell me how we need to get things fixed. I think between you and I we solved half the worlds problems! I was your daughter for 60 years and that still wasn't enough time! Thank you for letting me be the clown of the group, I knew if I made you laugh all was right with the world!

I love you dad, Joannie (#3, Loadie, Sam and George)!

To the Ellinger Family,

I knew Mr. Ellinger from his visits and telephone calls to Texas State Bank and then Compass Bank. He was always such a delight to visit with. His ever present smile and thoughtful words always made me happy to hear his voice and to see him. He will be missed.

I am truly sorry for your loss. God Bless.

October 16, 2009

Dear Ellinger Family,

My Dad just called me in Tampa notifying me of your loss. I can remember so vividly Mr. Ellinger coaching me way back when as a child at St. Thomas Aquinas. Always a smile from him, good play or bad on my part.

My best wishes to your family. I can only imagine how much your lives have been enriched with "Coach Ellinger", considering I can remember how he enriched mine from 40 years ago.

Dear Lynn and Megan,
I'm so sorry to hear the news. Thanks for letting me know.
He was a wonderful man who led a good life. I know you are happy and proud to be his family. It's hard to loose such a dear person in your life. I daily have reflections and memories of my dad, who was my moral compass and inspiration. I will keep you in my prayers. If I didn't have 7 students on Saturday I would try to get there for the service, but I can't get subs that easy.
I love you,
Ches Hudel

What a beautiful obituary tribute to this amazing man and my very dear friend. Bob's council, laughter, heart-felt concern, and beautiful spirit will forever remain part of my deepest joys. How he loved his family and how you, his family, loved him! His and your courage in the very face of death continues to speak volumes to all who witnessed it about real faith, love, devotion, and joy. He - Pat and all of you are my heroes. God's comfort to you as you walk through this time together. I'll take a lesson from Bob and wish you all "enough."

Love to you, Barbara

Dad,
I miss you and will continue to do so in the future. You were the perfect Dad for me and I hope I was "one" of the perfect daughters for you. I remember all the times you came to bat for me I will remember all "pearls of wisdom" you imparted to me, you were priceless to me. Your spirit lives on in my thoughts and memories. Remembering that "you don't get it from the neighbors", makes me grateful that you were the one I got it from (along with Mom). Thanks for being my Dad.

Love, Elaine

Dr. Bob touched mine and Kenny's hearts from the first time we met him while Kenny was in the hospital for quadruple bypass surgery. I was very scared and panicked as was my husband but Dr. Bob helped ease our fears and turned out to be a true friend to us both. His support during that time in our lives was so appreciated and he continued with his caring ways up until the end. He will surely be missed by us.

I miss you Daddy, you went so fast. I didn't get the chance to show you the pictures that Roy and I took of the Arizona Memorial. We had a shot of your ship that was taken on D-Day that I wanted to show you. I miss your phone calls and your pearls of wisdom.

I love you, The Baby
