Sylvia (Waxse) Mansfield
March 2, 1949 - October 14, 2023
Overland Park, Kansas - Sylvia (Waxse) Mansfield passed away on October 14, 2023 after falling and breaking her hip a few months earlier. She had lived with Parkinson's disease for many years and had been dealing with Lewy body dementia.
Sylvia was born in Oswego, Kansas, on March 2, 1949 to Mary and I.J. Waxse. She grew up in Oswego with her brothers Dave and Jody and her sister Paula. Family travel, school activities & Girl Scouts, her horse Sugar Babe and some mild torment from her brothers filled her childhood. She then attended the University of Kansas where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. While working at KU Med she reconnected with her brother's high school coach Charlie Mansfield as she cared for his father. She married Charlie on March 25, 1972 and had three children Adam, Megan, and Mark. While living in Baldwin, Cheney, Garnett, and Clay Center Sylvia worked as a nurse in both hospitals and the offices of family practitioners.
Caring for others was core to her being. She helped countless patients, was a loving mother, grandmother and friend, and gave many hours to volunteer activities in her community through the AAUW, Nova Vista, KU Honors Scholars Program, and the Clay County Arts Council.
She loved crossword & jigsaw puzzles, watching HGTV & the weather, and being with her family. She enjoyed a good cheeseburger and fries or a steak and baked potato from Jess & Jims. It was always a good time to have a strawberry shake from Andy's or a scoop of Jamoca Almond Fudge from Baskin Robbins and her grandkids loved to enjoy a treat with her whenever they could.
Sylvia is survived by her children Adam (Anne) & Megan (Christer); her grandkids Hadlee, Ellie, Louis & Zachary; her sister-in-laws Judy Pfannenstiel, Linda Waxse & Marianne Waxse; and her nieces & nephews.
Sylvia is predeceased by her parents; husband Charlie; son Mark; brothers Dave & Jody Waxse; sister Paula Goering and brother-in-law Joe Goering; and niece Rachel Bartel.
Burial for Charlie, Sylvia, and Mark will be Saturday, March 2 at 1:30 pm at Oakwood Cemetery in Baldwin, KS followed by a celebration of life at Baldwin City Brewery, 520 High Street, Baldwin City, KS 66006.
