In 2014 the president of France, Francois Hollande, appointed Vincent Chevalier (Knight) in the Legion of Honour. Vincent attended college on the G.I. bill and he graduated from Kansas City University (now UMKC) School of Law, in 1953. He was elected Missouri State Senator from the 10th District in 1955. From 1972- 1974 he served as Republican Attorney for the Kansas City Election Board. In 1981 he was appointed Associate Circuit Judge by Governor Christopher "Kit" Bond. He retired in 1991 but continued to serve as Senior Judge until 2004. He was a member of the greatest generation. Like so many men his age, he never mentioned, at least, to me,that he landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and received so many decorations. I will alwaysbe grateful to him for teaching me the words to "Casey Jones".

Sorry for the loss of a Super person. He would tell me his life in WWII and I would do the same when I was in Vietnam. I'm sure everything we said was TRUE????? I had five Uncles in WWII and they were all Superrmen. So I know the Judge is in Heaven and talking about the war at Happy Hour with them. My friend Judge Baker gave Unselfish Service to America. I hope St. Patrick gave you a safe trip to Heaven. RIP. I will miss you. Terry J Clark. Villach Austria & Raymore MO

Throughout life you meet people that make a difference. Vince was such a person. I miss his laugh, his smile, his stories. I miss taking out leftover hamburger to his beloved Scottish Terrier "Barney" aka Col Bernard W. McQuade. I miss his "Bean Parties". I'm sure he's in Heaven with Dirk Ellis, Norm Sanders, and his brother Phil having a bowl of beans, cornbread, and consuming some whisky. I once asked Vince if drinking in heaven was allowed. Vince replied "If drinking is not allowed in heaven I shall not go". But most of all I miss the man...he was a Warrior. God Bless you Vince.

I had to train with Judge Baker for felony arraignments nearly 30 years ago in Criminal Court. I still recall how he told it like it was.

Uncle Vincent was such an inspiration to all of us throughout all our lives. His brother Philip Baker MD.our Dad,and Vincent were close all their lives,as well as all his kids.To share with you all how much he cared for us Vincent even took off work to go to Mexico with my sister and myself when my mother died there. We were overwhelmed and had no idea how to deal with a foreign country's rules and regulations! He was by our sides the whole time and even stayed with us on the long drive home in Mothers car from San Miguel to Kansas City! We had to stop in Laredo to get many of her belonging, rent a trailer, load it up,and drive home through fog, rain, and sleet and snow! The last part was in second gear as the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass was on her last tires and engine especially after the mountains in Mexico! Mary and I never could have managed this without him!
We will never see the likes of him again. Uncle Vincent was a complicated man.He was witty, kind, stern, calculated, funny, gregarious, intelligent, big hearted, contentious, wise, reckless, hot tempered, loving, forgiving, and the most fun,all rolled up into one great man!Our lives won't ever be the same without him,but I know he celebrated St.Patrick's day in heaven with many of his friends. He couldn't Have a whisky in Hospice! I will always love you! Gwynn Baker Pirnie

Judge Baker married us in November 1999. He was my Mother's first employer in Kansas City and she truly loved him. She was a Democrat and of course he was a die hard Republician. They had many debates. My now husband's Father was to find someone to marry us and he picked Judge Baker, not knowing my Mother's work with him.You were a great man and Iwill be dearly missed. We just learned about Vincent and we are stunned. What would 70th Street have been like without Vince? He was a fixture there for so many wonderful years. We can still hear his slow drawl as he told so many memorable stories.
We are away and cannot get back for the service but you can be sure all of you will be in our thoughts and prayers.
Warmly,

Judge Baker was the most compassionate man to sit on the bench in Jackson County. It was always a pleasure to be in his presence. May God Bless his family.

As Brother-in-law to Vince for almost 50 years, I grew to respect and indeed love the self-made man. His sarcastic wit and humor was hilarious as well as very intelligent. Among his well-known accomplishments I want to note that he was also a musician! He played banjo in a band on stage at many clubs and events prior to his military career. And he carried a rich bass vocal as a singer. A wonderful human being who lived a unique and prosperous life, he is sadly missed by anyone who had the pleasure to share his company.
