Peter J. McDonnell
Born: March 25, 1955 in Chicago, IL
Died: March 20, 2021 in Maywood, IL
Peter J. McDonnell, M.D., FACS, RPVI age 65, of Oak Park, Illinois died March 20, 2021 at Loyola Hospital in Maywood, Illinois, due to complications from a bicycle accident. Peter was surrounded by his wife, four children, and his brother Alan at the time of his death. Peter was born March 25, 1955 in Chicago.
He married the love of his life, Vera McDonnell, on November 20th, 1984. They raised their four children Christopher Thomas of Oak Park, Katherine McDonnell of Oak Park, Alan McDonnell of Lake Tahoe, and Matthew (Linsey) McDonnell of Indianapolis, in Oak Park, surrounded by a wonderful community of friends and family. He was a devoted grandfather to Caleb Lofton, Noah Thomas-Sanchez, Serenity, Olivia, and Vera McDonnell.
Peter was known to his colleagues, residents, nurses, and patients as a compassionate and caring physician. He saved countless lives, and the families of those he was unable to save were forever grateful to him for the care he provided to their loved ones. Peter was a healer, protector, and family man, who wore many hats - husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, friend, mentor and Vascular Surgeon. Peter loved reading, sports, and bike riding. He graduated from Little Flower High School in 1972 and from Loyola University in 1976 with a degree in History. He received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 1984 from Chicago Medical School. He began his residency in 1984 at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan, his fellowship in 1988 at the Cleveland Clinic, and began serving the community at Cook County Hospital. His primary medical practice was at Palos Hospital. Most recently he was on staff at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health in Bremerton, Washington.
Peter is survived by his wife, four children, and five grandchildren as well as his siblings Patricia (Norman) Aper, Alan D. Johnson, M.D. (his best friend all his life), Melissa, Dennis (Rose), and John (Sheila) McDonnell, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Peter was preceded in death by his parents, John J. McDonnell and Patricia Johnson McDonnell (nee Cunningham), and his brothers, Walter (Charlene-deceased) Johnson and Jeffrey B. (Maureen) Johnson, M.D.
The family thanks everyone for the outpouring of love and support shown throughout Peter's hospitalization and death.

Just saw the posting of Peter's death. My very sincere sympathy to his wife and children, as well as to his brother, Alan. We all spent many good days on the playgrounds of Little Flower. Ran into him a few years back at Palos Hospital and was happy to see he was doing so well. I know he was a highly regarded surgeon. He was also a really good person. May God grant him eternal life and bless all of you. I am deeply sorry for your loss.

Dr. McDonnell was a talented and caring surgeon and truly a class act. He was down to earth and always spoke honestly with his patients. I was so sorry to hear of his accident and passing. It was a pleasure working with him at Palos. My thoughts and prayers as you deal with this loss.

Every time I look at this picture it takes my breath away! I miss and love you more than ever. Everyday that passes I miss you more. You were more than my better half, you were my better three/fourths. I will never be the same without you. I will however continue to try and live up to your expectations. I promise you I will keep both eyes on Caleb and never give up. I promise you I will keep our family strong, as you did, to the best of my ability. I hope you are in heaven, if there is one, with Granny. I hope you and Jeff are having one of your heated conversations. I hope to see you some day again. I love you!

I am so sorry for your great loss. I didn't know Peter well, but I remember him from family functions when we were young. He was always so nice. My prayers are with you all.
