James Nilsen Obituary

James Waldemer Nilsen, known affectionately as Jim to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025, in Medford, Oregon, at the age of 93. Born on July 16, 1932, in the Belgian Congo, which later became known as the Democratic Republic of Congo. Jim's life was a testament to his enduring spirit and deep-rooted faith. Jim grew up under the African sun, where the seeds of his Christian faith were sown early on. His education was a journey of both mind and spirit, as he graduated from Canyonville Bible Academy and furthered his studies at Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, and Southern California Bible College in Pasadena, California. These experiences solidified his commitment to his beliefs and laid the foundation for his life's work and passions. A skilled carpenter by trade, Jim dedicated most of his adult life to perfecting his craft. In 1972, he built a family home with his own hands-a home that would become a sanctuary of love and memories for the next 53 years. His work was not just a job, but a calling, where every nail and beam was a testament to his dedication and hard work. Jim's heart was always fullest when he was surrounded by his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 71 years, Judy Nilsen, who was the cornerstone of his life. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Jonathan W. Nilsen and Pamela Kalista. Jim was a guiding light to his seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, each of whom will carry forward his legacy of kindness and faith. Beyond his family and work, Jim had a zest for life that was undeniable. His voice was a gift that he shared freely, singing in quartets and ensembles, often gracing others with solos that touched the soul. Jim's love for adventure saw him traveling across the United States and to distant lands, always with a sense of wonder and enthusiasm. An avid outdoorsman, he found peace in the simplicity of nature, whether he was hunting, fishing, or tending to his garden. A man of many interests, Jim never missed an opportunity to gather with family, play games, and create moments that would turn into cherished memories. His kindness, adventurous spirit, and faith-filled life were the hallmarks of his character, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we remember Jim, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and love. His unwavering commitment to serving God, his devotion as a husband, and his love for his family remain as beacons of light for all who follow in his footsteps. Though he has left this earthly realm, his spirit continues to inspire us, reminding us of the power of a life well-lived. James Waldermer Nilsen's journey on earth has ended, but his story-etched in the lives he touched and the love he shared-will endure forever. We bid farewell to a man who was the embodiment of kindness, adventure, and unwavering faith. Rest in peace, dear Jim, until we meet again.
