Norman Shaskey Obituary
Norman John Shaskey passed away on October 29, 2025 at the age of 78. He was surrounded by his loving family as he took his last breath. "Stormin' Norman" lived a full and impactful life, and will be missed dearly by his family, friends, and community.
Norman was born on September 6, 1947 in Denver, CO, to Eugene Norman and Betty Jean (Fry) Shaskey, the eldest of their four children. His father was an Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and the family lived all over the country and traveled the world. Norman received Bachelors degrees in Economics and Geography and a Masters degree in Economics from UC Santa Barbara, where he was also Senior Class President in 1969. Although he was ineligible to serve in the military due to a problem with his vision, Norman was a dedicated public servant much of his life. He served as Mayor and Councilmember of Mountain View, CA, where he was instrumental in numerous positive changes for the city, including the creation of Shoreline Amphitheater. He also served as a trustee for Foothill and DeAnza colleges. In his later years, Norman served as Councilmember for the city of Yreka, CA, and was an active member of the Yreka Rotary Club.
Norman was a Certified Public Accountant licensed in California and Oregon, with his own CPA tax practice. He faithfully served many tax clients for over half a century. He often referenced the famous Benjamin Franklin quote "the only thing guaranteed in life is death and taxes" when asked why he decided to become a CPA. Norman previously worked 25 years as a corporate controller/chief financial officer for several corporations.
Stormin' Norman worked hard and played hard, communicating with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as he ran through the beauty of our world. He was a member of many running clubs and ran almost daily for most of his life. He completed numerous races, triathlons, and a total of 85 marathons. He completed a 72-mile run around Lake Tahoe in a single day. Norman went on many adventures, backpacking, and mountain climbing trips with his family, and he successfully summited Mount Shasta (a pivotal accomplishment) in 1998. He then went on to build his dream home with a view of Mount Shasta in Yreka in 2001. Norman had a great love of music, attending frequent concerts and playing the tambourine. He was also a prolific writer of poetry throughout much of his life.
Norman met his wife Pam in May of 2004 at an Oakland A's game. They shared a love of life, baseball, music, and faith. Norman and Pam moved to Yreka from the Bay Area in 2005, and they built a life there together over the past two decades. Norman was previously married to Elizabeth in 1971, who he met while in college. They had a daughter Laura in 1981, however they divorced when Laura was very young. He truly cherished his daughter and was a wonderful father. He taught her about patience, kindness, faith, public service, sports, music, and living life to its fullest. Although he wasn't able to have more children, he was excited to recently become a grandpa to his granddaughter Kira, who just turned 2 years old.
Norman is survived by his wife Pamela (Hanson) Shaskey, daughter Laura Shaskey (husband Brian Winogradov), stepson Christopher Skilling, granddaughter Kira Shaskey, sisters Sharon Tochilin and Christal Duncan (husband Mike), brother David Shaskey, and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Yreka. A Celebration of Life service will be announced in the future. In lieu of flowers please consider planting a tree in honor of Norman.
