Helen "Maxine" Skiles

Alma resident, 92

ALMA - Helen "Maxine" Skiles, 92, of Alma died on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society – Colonial Villa in Alma.

A memorial graveside service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Alma Cemetery in Alma with the Rev. Darrel Wissmann officiating.

The family has honored Maxine's wish for cremation. There will be no visitation or memorial book signing.

The Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma is in charge of the arrangements.

Maxine was born in Hardyville, Kentucky on July 15, 1929, the ninth of 12 children to Frank and Rose (Coffee) Gillock.

After obtaining her high school diploma, Maxine worked tirelessly as a waitress in a bustling Louisville, Kentucky café. There, she met the love of her life, Dale G. Skiles, who was stationed at Ft. Knox, serving as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army National Guard. The couple ventured back to Nebraska, and on Sept. 12, 1953, Dale and Maxine were united in marriage at St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Republican City. To this marriage, one child was born, a daughter, Rhonda. They made their home on the family farm north of Alma where Maxine was a doting wife, keeping the garden and home running smoothly until Dale's death in 2018. Maxine was an impressive homemaker who especially enjoyed needlework, crochet projects, and church events. She will be remembered for her quiet, sweet disposition and sparkling eyes.

Survivors include her daughter, Rhonda Skiles of Alma; granddaughter, Heather Skiles of Milford; brother-in-law, Lyle Skiles and his wife, Elaine of Franklin; along with lots of extended family and friends.

Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Dale G. Skiles; her parents; and all eleven of her siblings.

In lieu of flowers or cards, the family kindly suggests memorials be sent to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Republican City.
