Robert G. "Bob" Rhodes
Robert "Bob" G. Rhodes, age 87, of Kearney, passed away Thursday, February 15, 2024 at Kearney Regional Medical Center. A Christian Wake Service will be 6:00 pm, Friday, February 23, 2024 at St. John the Baptist Church in Minden. Funeral mass will be 11:00 am, Saturday, February 24, 2024 at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney with Father James Evan Winter officiating. Burial with military honors will be at a later date in the Omaha National Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. He was born on August 31, 1936 in Weeping Water, NE, to George Washington "Jack" Jr and Martha Ellen (McMullin) Rhodes. He graduated from Weeping Water High School in 1954. After school he joined the United States Marine Corp raising to the rank of Sergeant. He was stationed in Santa Ana, CA working in helicopter radio communications. He was also involved in the atomic bomb tests at Yucca Flats, NV. Upon leaving the Marines in 1957, he briefly worked at Western Electric where he met his soon-to-be wife. Shortly afterward he joined the Nebraska State Patrol, working as a trooper and then pilot in the Air Wing. He served for 30 years until retirement in 1989.
He was married to Rose Mary Von Dollen on June 4, 1960 in Council Bluffs, IA. To this union two sons, Robert and Steve and two daughters, Mary and Cindy were born. He is survived by his wife Rose Mary; two brothers Phil Rhodes (Linda) of Weeping Water, NE, Jack Rhodes (Theresa) of Katy, TX, and sister Marilyn Stratton (Ken) of Weeping Water, NE; four children Robert Rhodes (Rhonda) of Elkhorn, NE, Steve Rhodes of Kearney, NE, Mary Welch (Patrick) of Leesburg, FL, and Cindy Laughter (Mike) of Lincoln, NE; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents George and Martha Rhodes and sister Rae Ellen Mitchell.

I knew Bob when I worked at the airport in Kearney. I sure enjoyed visiting with him. And being in the same neighborhood, I loved seeing him out fishing & keeping busy at the park. Condolences to his family.

Bob Rhodes was one of the "good" guys. He got along with everyone. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant on the Patrol but gave it up so he could continue to fly with the Patrol Air Wing. He did a lot of work with the SPEED Team,
