Christine Thormodsgard Obituary

Christine Thormodsgard, 98, passed away at Avera Prince of Peace Nursing Home peacefully on August 13, 2020.

Private family funeral services will be at Heritage Funeral Home on Monday, August 17 at 12:00 p.m. with burial to follow at Hills of Rest Cemetery. Christine's funeral will be live streamed on Zoom.

Christine was born September 21, 1921, to Peter and Johannah Lund in Bowdon, N.D. She graduated from Bowdon High School in 1940.
On September 25, 1940, Christine married Murhl Thormodsgard. For fifteen years she and Murhl farmed in North Dakota. In 1956 they moved to Canton, South Dakota where the two made a great team owning and operating the Canton Hardware store and later built and ran the bowling alley, Murhl's Lanes, in Canton.

Christine enjoyed bird watching, making beautiful quilts, playing cards, baking, ballroom dancing and her absolutely favorite activity was being an outstanding mother and grandmother.

Christine was a member of Canton Lutheran Church until she moved to Sioux Falls, where she became a member of Hope Lutheran Church.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband in 2000, her survivors include three daughters: Faye (Humphrey) Maris of Barrington, R.I., June and Joy Thormodsgard of Sioux Falls; and a son Kim (Tammy) of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests that memorials be directed to a charity of your choice in Christine's honor.

Auntie I will miss you always but comforted that you have moved on to our “Father’s House”. You so patiently waited for Him to come for you never wasting the gifts our creator gave you to touch hearts with love, laughter and compassion
always. God is so good and He clearly shared His love for All of us through you.
A day never went by that that you didn’t allow our Savior to use my Auntie for good. The memory I hold closest to my heart is seeing your face and hearing the words “I love you too honey”.
Then: sleep overs, pinochle adventures (and they were an adventure), fudge - cream pies- and coffee, being my GPS Navigator to get us around S Falls via back streets to avoid stress for both you and I., riding shot gun when I collected the coins from Bill’s vending machines especially at the Crow Bar (yikes). Our very fun trips to Hancock and Glenwood for “Auntie reunions” with Edith and Ardelle, instigating watermelon seed spitting contests with us kids at reunions which you mostly won. Years of mischief and laughter with an occasional tear. Thanks for All the memories Auntie Christine❣

I remember Christine as a beautiful lady always at the Thormodsgard reunions. Murhl and she made a great looking couple. My mom and dad, Lawrence and Opal Thormodsgard Hagen always enjoyed visiting with them and going to the bowling alley in Canton. Of course my parents are gone but I bet they are enjoying a reunion in heaven now. Blessed be her memory.

Dear June and siblings,
My sympathy to you on the death of your mom. A North Dakota girl first, and then on to South Dakota and a big, busy family. Quite a life!
It’s hard to lose a mom, at any age. Take good care of each other.
