Mark Jon Van Asselt

Mark Jon Van Asselt, age 67, of Colton, SD, passed into glory on March 21, 2024. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at First Lutheran Church, Colton. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Tuesday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Chapel in Colton. Mark was born to Willie and Ramona (Clauson) Van Asselt on August 18, 1956, in Sioux Falls. He married Peggy Collins Kuper on April 26, 2003, and they soon would have celebrated their 21st anniversary. Mark endured and fought 20 years of carcinoid cancer with Peggy by his side. His treatments included three trips to Switzerland before treatments were available in the United States, and many trips to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Mark always lived by Colton where he farmed his entire adult life. His grandfather, Herman Clauson, influenced him greatly in his love of farming. Mark and Peggy enjoyed vacationing during their time together. They visited Hawaii, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Mexico, Arizona, New York, Florida, and took several cruises. Mark is survived by his wife, Peggy; sisters: Rhonda (Dave) Anderson, and Mary (Mike) Will; brother, Thomas (fiancée Heather Bowden) Van Asselt; stepchildren: Douglas "DJ" (Amanda) Kuper and Heather (Adam) Hardisty; step grandchildren: Tori, Anaya, Aria, Hayley, Alex, and Hope; and many nieces and nephews. Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Ramona Van Asselt; grandparents: Herman & Hilda Clauson, and Art & Sena Van Asselt; sister-in-law, Darla Van Asselt; and a step granddaughter, Hannah.
