Edward J. Szelagowski 93, of Yorkville Illinois, passed away Friday, October 15, 2021 at Seasons Hospice Inpatient Center, most recently residing at Cedarhurst of Yorkville. He was born October 8, 1928 in suburban Cleveland, Ohio the son of Edward J Szelagowski and Florence (Przybylski). He married Betty Mae Griff in 1949. Because they were only 20 years old their parents needed to give their approval. They had 64 loving years of marriage until Betty passed away in 2013.
Their marriage was blessed with a son and a daughter. They raised their children and lived in Garfield Heights, a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio until 2005 when they relocated to Yorkville, Illinois. Growing up his first job was as a newspaper boy. As a young man, he worked for a time as a trimmer die sinker. In 1961 he began a 29 year career in the trucking industry, eventually becoming a dock supervisor for a subsidiary of Sherwin Williams.
Ed's favorite sport was baseball. He transitioned from a Cleveland Indians fan to a Cubs fan with the move to Illinois. He loved Wrigley field and the excitement of attending the games. Family vacations included 16 summers in Myrtle Beach, several Caribbean cruises, a 50th anniversary Hawaiian cruise, various Florida trips and most recently annual Las Vegas vacations. He always loved gathering with extended family to celebrating holidays and special events.
Since 2013 he has been a regular at the Beecher Senior Center on Bingo days, which is where he met his lady friend Beverly Newton and they have been inseparable ever since. They both enjoyed playing Bingo and taking casino trips. They watched the birds visit their variety of bird feeders on a daily basis. It was a special day when a Cardinal was spotted at the feeders.
Ed is survived by his brother Jerry Szelagowski of Elyria, Ohio (previously Parhrump, Nevada). He is also survived by his daughter Karen DeAngelis (spouse Dennis Nielsen) of Yorkville, Illinois and son Edward R. (Lucy) Szelagowski of Westfield, Wisconsin; all five of his grandchildren Stephanie DeAngelis (spouse Lon Tibbs), Jennifer Monesmith, Edward (Kristy) Szelagowski, April Szelagowski and Christopher (Ashley) Szelagowski. And he is survived by his four great-grandchildren, Paige Monesmith, Nina Tibbs, Ethan Tibbs and Charlotte Szelagowski; and one great-great-granddaughter Adelee Monesmith. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his loving wife Betty Mae, his parents Edward and Florence Szelagowski, and his sister Theresa Flick and brother Walter Szelagowski.
The funeral mass will be held on Friday October 29, 2021 at 11:00 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 406 Walnut Street, Yorkville, Illinois. A graveside service will follow immediately at Risen Lord Cemetery in Oswego, Illinois.
