Gary Lynn Bennett, age 76, of Plano, IL, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2026 at his home in Plano after fighting a long battle with cancer. He was born on December 15, 1949, in Sandwich, IL, the son of Charles and Christina (Smith) Bennett.
Gary was united in marriage on November 15, 1969 to Miss Betty Sue Lawrence, and they spent the next 56 years happily together. Mr. Bennett was employed by Caterpillar for 22 years, and then spent 26 years at Kresl as a maintenance manager and new-equipment modification technician. Gary was also a lifelong farmer, a role that was always close to his heart. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle who will be missed by his family and many friends.
Gary is survived by his wife, Betty Sue Bennett of Plano, IL; his children, Gary Michael (Marilyn) Bennett of Peotone, IL, Carol Ann (Jeffery) Mills of Corbin, KY, and Janet (Bernie) Wall of Yorkville, IL; his grandchildren, Tierney, Eddy, Eric, Patrick, Emma, Jack, Katie, Jarrett and Kaylee; his three great-grandchildren; his siblings, Bob (Julie) Bennett of Plano, IL and Kathy Barnette of Millington, IL; as well as his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Christina Bennett; and his brother-in-law, Jack Barnette.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 13, 2026 at Nelson Funeral Home, 1617 North Bridge Street, Yorkville, IL. Interment will take place in Oak Grove Cemetery in Bristol, IL.
Friends and family may visit from 4 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2026 at the funeral home in Yorkville, IL.
