Wayne Edwin Gargrave Born: June 18, 1942 in Platteville, IL Died: October 16, 2021 in Nassau Bay, TX Wayne Edwin Gargrave, age 79, of Friendswood, TX passed away on October 16, 2021, at nearby Methodist Hospital-Clear Lake following a long bout with an auto-immune disorder. Born June 18, 1942, in Platteville, IL, Wayne was the son of Ruth Harriet (Heap) and Dale Almon Gargrave and a 1960 graduate of Yorkville High School. He attended Joliet Junior College, graduated from the University of Illinois in 1965 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, and completed his education in 1967 with an M.S. in the same from the University of California-Berkeley. Accepting a position with Standard Oil immediately following his December graduation, he began his career as an engineer with the company in 1968 in the research department located at the Whiting, IN, refinery. There he met Janice Stefanac, whom he would begin dating after she transferred to the company's Chicago offices. They would marry on August 1, 1970. Other postings with the company included two stints in the Houston, TX area and two further postings around Chicago. Wayne retired from the company, then known as BP, in 1999 at age 57. Wayne was known for his love of figuring out and making things work, teaching his boys how to do stuff, and giving gifts to his children and grandchildren. From his boyhood years to his retirement, there were countless hours taking apart equipment, improving this or that, and then running it in service of some need on the farm or at home. He taught his boys how to shoot by throwing 'hedge apples' in the air for careful first attempts with the shotgun, and thankfully, looked the other way when the same boys would run the rebuilt go-cart a little less carefully around a turn. Favorite tools, dresses and shoes, drones, and memories of trips to here, there, and everywhere are in the hearts of his grandchildren because of his generosity. No one would accuse Wayne of being social, but in retirement, he spent much time helping his wife decorate for the seasons and prepare their home for the visit of friends during Janice's frequent game nights. Wayne is survived by his wife of 51 years, Janice Patricia Gargrave, and three married sons: Eric Gargrave of Augusta, Mo, Chad Gargrave of Woodridge, Il, and Dale Gargrave of Friendswood, Tx, and six grandchildren, and his sister, Janice Towne, of Oswego, IL, and nephews Steve and Chris Stockham. He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother. He will be interred with his parents and brother at Platteville Cemetery. A public service of gratitude and celebration for his life will be held at Platteville United Methodist Church on Friday, November 26th at 10 a.m., after which light refreshments will be served. A private ceremony for the family will follow at the cemetery.
