Delton Ehni was the real deal! A man of faith who loved his family and friends, and who proudly and honorably served his country. He was one of the last members of, what many have called, the greatest generation.
Our fathers were brothers. Sons of immigrant farmers who had fled from the oppression of 19th century Europe and came to America seeking only freedom and an opportunity for a better life for themselves and their family. It was from those roots that our dads learned their values and from our dads that those values were passed down to us.
After leaving the farm, my dad settled in Omaha while Delton grew up on his parent’s farm not far from our grandparents’ homestead. As a city kid, I looked forward to our annual trip to Fessenden, usually around Wells County Fair time, which often coincided with Delton’s birthday. I remember walking down the carnival midway, riding the rides, playing the games and sitting with Delton in the grandstands to watch chariot races and Joey Chitwood’s Daredevil Drivers.
Time went on and Delton left North Dakota with his buddy Gordon to serve in the Navy during the Korean war. After the war, Delton came to Omaha to attend college on the G.I. bill. He lived with us for a time while attending college and we would often go to Omaha Cardinal’s baseball games together and to the park where he would hit fly balls to me.
Delton eventually settled in Wisconsin where he met and was married to the love of his life, Sherry. Years later, after losing Sherry to a battle with cancer, Delton moved back to Fessenden to be closer to his roots and especially to his brother Ellery. It was a that point that I reconnected with Delton during the week of the fair and the celebration of his 80th birthday. It was the beginning of my renewed relationship with a remarkable man whom I had always been fond of and admired. Although we were 14 years apart, I always thought of him as the big brother I never had.
During that week, we went to the fair, had lunch at the Catholic stand and toured all of the places that I remembered from my childhood. We even went to Turtle Lake to try to find our Grandparents’ homestead.
Every year since, I have returned to go to the fair with Delton and to celebrate his birthday. My wife Marilyn and I always look forward to spending time with Delton. Along with the fair and our visit to the family farms, we would go to the casino at Devil’s Lake where Delton liked to play the penny slots, have lunch and make a trip to Walmart.
During the last few years, Delton has lived at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in New Rockford. I’m so grateful for the care and compassion he received there. Beginning with our cousin, Jim Ehni and his son Jason, and continuing to Angie, his social worker, Bev, his friend in the cafeteria, and all of the nurses and support staff, Delton was always showered with love and respect.
A few days ago, on January 6th, Delton decided that he’d had enough and that it was time to depart from this life. He’s leaving behind a world that would probably be unrecognizable to those who have come before us, a world filled with illness, divisiveness and unrest. No wonder he’d had enough!
I will miss so much about Delton. His calls on my birthday, our visits on his birthday, the fair, our drives to Heaton and Bowdon, our visits with our cousin Terri and and her husband Jim in Cathay, lunches at the Catholic stand and the Bowdon café and our day in Devil’s Lake. Most of all I’ll miss just spending time with him, sharing our memories and our talks about the lessons of life. It may have been chance that made us cousins, but it was choice that made us friends!
So, rest in peace dear Delton. Yours was a life well lived. You’ll live on in my heart and you’ll always be as close as the memories that I cherish. The world of 2022 isn’t meant for one as beautiful as you! With my love and admiration, Bud

Several years ago I had the true pleasure of going to a country western bar with Delt, his grandson, and Paul and Marilyn Ehni. Marilyn and I danced with Delt for at least an hour. Talk about a beautiful smile on his face. Just made you smile to look at his grin from ear to ear. Thank you Delt.

These last few years I have gotten very close to Delton. We would have our little talks every week and I know he was a Packers fan for many years, he turned into a big NDSU Bison fan these past years. He was always happy when my son Jason would be the one who would change the bedding on his bed each week. Jason, who happens to have Down Syndrome, would have some great conversations with Delton. I will definitely miss our visits.❤❤

Delton will surely be missed by all at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd. He brought spunk and fun to many around him. He had an impish grin and a sparkle in his eyes that made the days go better.
