THOMAS JONATHAN REVERE

REVERE, Thomas Jonathan 74, of Seven Gates Farm in West Tisbury, on Marthas Vineyard. Son of Thomas and Althea Revere of New York City, he was widely known as Jonathan. He is survived by his sister, Lee Revere, also of Seven Gates. Writer and poet, he was at the center of cultural life on the island and noted for his ability to bring together people in the arts with similar interests. Class Poet for his class at Harvard University, from which he graduated in 1960, at the time of his death he was nearing completion of a novel. He had a passionate interest in and encyclopedic knowledge of literature, particularly American writers, as well as music, theatre, and film, while his strong interest in government transparency also led him to local politics, where he spearheaded a number of reforms. At the time of his death he was serving as a member of the Finance Committee of West Tisbury, and was on the Board of Directors of MVTV, the islands public-access TV station, where he was also a producer and chronicler of island life. He was known island-wide for his generosity, wit, and constant loyalty. A memorial service is planned for the spring.
