Anne Doolin Obituary

Anne Doolin
June 19, 2021
Lexington, Kentucky - Anne Charles Doolin, 61, of Lexington, Kentucky and formerly of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, died June 19th, 2021. Anne was born in Mt. Sterling on September 22, 1959, the daughter of the late Bill and Cricket Charles. She graduated from Montgomery County High School in 1977 and the University of Kentucky in 1981.
Anne's love of horses combined with her writing skills led her early career to the Meadowlands in New Jersey, Sciota Downs in Columbus, Ohio, and the Red Mile in Lexington. At all three tracks Anne was involved in public relations and track promotions. She continued her relationship with horses and racing by writing free lance articles for various equine publications until her passing.
During the last twenty years of her life in Lexington, Anne was an activist in animal rescue and care. She fostered many dogs and cats and also coordinated the transfer of animals in shelters to permanent homes throughout the state. She was involved in helping people as well and served as President of "Downtown People", a non-profit organization that feeds a pot luck meal every Sunday to those in need. In 2017 she received the "January Davis Awards", presented by the United States Harness Association for her numerous good works.
In addition to her parents, Anne was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Bess Charles. She is survived by an aunt, Sue Reed, of Lexington. Other survivors include cousins Bert Charles III of Mt. Sterling, Carol Davis, Sara Porter, Kathy Simpson, and Geoff Reed, all of Lexington. Anne is also survived by longtime special friend William Copeland.
Special thanks to Anne's close friends Theresa Shaffer and Francis Richie who assisted Anne through her extended battle with cancer. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to "Helping Every Animal Rescue and Transport" (HEART); 4698 Kentucky 409, Sandy Hook, KY 41171.
Services will be private.

Anne was memorable to me because she was so kind and thoughtful toward others - other people, other animals. She truly made the world a better place. I haven´t talked to her for more than a decade, but knowing she is gone, makes the world seem just a little less kind. My deepest sympathies to the legion of people who loved her and will miss her.

You can't help but know that Anne is surrounded by 2, 3 & 4 legged creatures. She is smiling and making all behave.

Anne is the sweetest friend and most animal loving person you would meet. I talked to her a lot when I first started transporting animals. I was geographically challenged back then. But I could call on her any time and she would get me where I needed to be. Anne introduced me to many rescue groups and individuals needing animals transport. She is the one that got me started in transporting to help get animals up north. Anne had a way of building you up to do things you didn’t think you could do. She would be there every step of the way. I’ll always remember Anne and will keep her in my heart. Thank you Lord for using Anne as a vessel for your animals and the people that she left a lasting impression on. I love you and will miss you Anne!

I was saddened to hear of Anne’s passing. I all my dealings with her in her time in harness racing there was never a disparaging word. She was a trooper to say the least and went beyond the call of duty. If one did not appreciate her sense of humour, work ethic and love for the racing game there is no hope for any of us left. Anne, thank you for everything.
