Barbara Fried Obituary

FRIED Barbara (Bobbi), 69, passed away on February 27, surrounded by her family, after sustaining a long illness with the grace and patience which characterized her entire life. She was born on September 1, 1946, the only child of the late Marian and Fred Perel and grew up in Birmingham, AL. With a degree from Birmingham Southern College, she taught primary school in Cincinnati for several years, later earning a Master's Degree in Library Science and working as a librarian for the University of Kentucky. She worked as the librarian for Temple Adath Israel for many years as well as serving as president of the Temple Sisterhood. Bobbi carried on multiple volunteer activities, working for the Lexington Public Library, the Book Buddy program, the Lexington Humane Society, and the Salvation Army among others. More than this, she was selfless in her devotion to friends and family with an indefatigable generosity of spirit. Bobbi loved animals and they loved her. This shy, self-effacing woman was also extensively travelled and adventurous, enjoying scuba diving, skiing, hiking, and, at one point, earning a motorcycle license. She was a source of strength and warmth to all around her; her passing leaves a void in many lives. Bobbi is survived by her husband of 49 years, Drew, two wonderful children, Joshua (Mickey) and Emily and a host of treasured family and friends. A special cousin, Phillip Rubin (Meg), was more a brother than a cousin. Her memory will warm our hearts forever. The family is grateful to the staff at the Willows at Hamburg for the excellent care and affection Bobbi received there. Visitation will be at Temple Adath Israel from 6-8pm on Monday, February 29 with a memorial service at the Temple at 10am on Tuesday, March 1, followed by burial in the Lexington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hospice of the Bluegrass or the Lexington Humane Society. www.milwardfuneral.com

Jolanta and I just learned today of Bobbi's death. We are better for having known her and fondly recall the time we spent with her and your family. I remember one evening in your home when we had just finished a great meal and our dogs got into a fight under the dinner table. While a lesser hostess might have been flustered by such a thing, Bobbi simply spoke sternly to the dogs, ushered them to the deck and came back to the table as if nothing had happened! She was never stuffy or pretentious, but she was a lady and always made us feel so welcomed. Drew, you were lucky to have her and she was so lucky to have you.

I'm so sorry for your loss. She was a good woman and always seemed happy and proud of her family. I know she will be missed. I'm sorry I missed the service, I didn't find out till late the night before.

Drew, I know these last few years have been difficult, and I have been impressed with your devotion. My mother, Martha Steele, lived in the same long term residence as Bobbi did for awhile. I hope we will keep in touch. Colleen Steele

I have the best memory of Bobbi. While I was working at Morning Pointe Lantern in Lexington, we had one of our monthly family nights. Bobbi had finished her dinner and was getting bored I believe. She was starting to express her boredom getting all wiggly sitting at the table. I took her into the classroom area and some of our other residents and their families were sitting in there and were cutting and making snowflakes. I wasn't sure if we'd be able to do that activity but I gave her a pair of safe scissors and folded a piece of paper and gave it to her. She loved it she would snip and turn the paper. We would unfold the paper and she would have a beautiful snowflake. The huge smile would come across her face. It was amazing. I loved her a lot and also I want a o let everyone know how dedicated her husband Drew is. He came everyday for lunch and for dinner and would eat with his wife. It always touched my heart to see his dedication to his wife. Drew, my heart is with you and your family during this sad time. I'm thinking of all of you.
