Brian MATTONE Obituary

MATTONE Brian Early, 40, of Lexington, KY, passed away Wed, May 2, 2012. Born Sep 1, 1971 in Richmond, VA. Brian was the son of Frank Michael Mattone and Ermina Darnell Mattone. He was the grandson of Mrs. Frank Constantine Mattone and the late Mr. Mattone, and of the late Dr. and Mrs. Matthew Cotton Darnell, Jr., all of Lexington. A member of the Cathedral of Christ the King, Brian was a long-time resident of Lexington and graduated from Lexington Catholic High School. He belonged to Delta Tau Delta fraternity at Florida State University, where he graduated in 1993 with a degree in Political Science. He was awarded a law degree from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1997. Brian developed an interest in law early in his educational career. During summers from 1990 through 1994, he worked as a Criminal Court Clerk and Civil Court Clerk with the Fayette District Court, and subsequently as a summer associate with the law firm of Greenbaum, Doll and McDonald in 1995, and with Vimont & Wills in 1996. Brian found the challenge of trial law had an irresistible appeal. Following law school graduation and admission to the Kentucky Bar in 1997, he joined the Fayette Commonwealth Attorney's Office as an Assistant Commonwealth Attorney, where he worked as a criminal prosecutor for 8 years. He committed his life's work to the pursuit of justice. In September of 2006, Brian was named the First Assistant Fayette County Attorney and worked with the Honorable Larry Roberts. In this role, Brian supervised and assisted prosecutors in preparing and trying cases, and carried administrative and personnel management responsibilities. He remained affiliated with the University of Kentucky College of Law and taught courses as an adjunct professor. Brian also initiated a Fayette County driver-education program, which taught defensive driving techniques and strategies to teenagers. Brian served on the Clean Indoor Air Partnership at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing and was an active member of the Kentucky Bar Association. He gave numerous presentations to Lexington civic associations, including the Lions Club, the Rotary Club, the AARP, Business Lexington, and several Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government departments. He was a volunteer in the Fayette County Attorney Mentoring Program at Booker T. Washington Academy, where he worked with a 5th grader and special friend, Tristen. Brian thrived on a challenge and was constantly active. He enjoyed cooking, home improvement projects, outdoor sports including running and cycling, and helping neighbors with their own projects. He was a devoted University of Kentucky sports fan and loved tailgating and attending UK football and basketball games. In addition to his parents, Brian is survived by his brothers Matthew Armon Mattone (Stephanie) and Michael Darnell Mattone, and his sister Mary Hallam Coleman Randolph Mattone Barton (Christopher). He also leaves behind his adoring nieces and nephews, Ella and John Barton, Tony and Sophie Mattone and his loyal dog, Max. Brian will be remembered by his family, friends, and colleagues for his quick and easy humor, his charismatic personality, and his dedication to helping others. Brian's life exemplified one of his favorite quotes by Abraham Lincoln: "And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years." Visitation will be 5-8pm Tue, May 8, at Milward Funeral Home - Broadway. Funeral services will be at 11am Wed, May 9, at the Cathedral of Christ the King. Dear Mattone family,

My parents (Marc/Eleanor McEllistrem) told me of your loss. Not sure what I could possibly say to make it less painful. Please know that people across the US are thinking of you, and praying you can somehow make it through this tragedy. While my siblings/I intertwined with you guys many years ago in school, it seems only like yesterday right now. Keeping your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Frank, Mina and family, I didn't know Brian well, but what I do know is that he was kind, polite, and fun. My children have fond memories of the times they got to share with their KY cousins. I'll never forget the day he took the extra time out of his schedule to visit Uncle John, after a biking event in Indy. Uncle brought it up quite often, "That Brian, he's a great guy!" Brian has done more in his short life, than many folks twice his age. I'm certain you burst with pride, just thinking about all he has accomplished. I know he will be sadly missed, but how many people have experienced the joy of doing something that they loved just before God called them home. He will be always in your hearts, and the cross he left behind will be a daily reminder that he is Okay! So when you feel that breeze on your face, or feel him with you, maybe a soft embrace, know he is with you. His journey to heaven was too soon and too swift, but the legacy he left, what a tribute to the great parents you are. Much love Dee, Mar, and the Il. cousins

Brain was a frequent speaker at our Chapter 345 AARP meetings and, I think I speak for all our members, when I say that he was an exceptional young man and we will miss him. He even brought brownies to our last luncheon meeting on April 25th where I had the opportunity to speak with him at length. We have lost a friend and an advocate for senior issues. Our hearts are broken for his family. Our community has suffered a great loss. Betty Slater, Secretary, Chapter 345 AARP

Brian Mattone was a man of great integrity! A genuine person who treated everyone he ever met like they were the most important person at that moment. A true public servant who put others needs before self. Charismatic, honest, sincere, friendly and funny- that's the guy I'll always remember. What can you possibly say to ease the heartache of this family, his friends, and this community? I worked with Brian from 2006 through 2010 in the County Attorney's Office. I can honestly say he was the kindest person I ever met. He had a very strong work ethic and genuinely cared about everyone around him. You only meet someone with all of Brian's special qualities once in a life time. My condolences to Brian's family and friends. Brian touched more lives in a memorable way than someone twice his age. I will miss our texts and emails my friend.

I met Brian Mattone when I was on the Grand Jury. He told me I would make a good defense attorney. I appreciate that compliment. He was a very friendly person whom I know his parents are so proud of him. Brian didn't deserve to die the way he did, he seem to be a good person. I have a Grandson and hope he will be like this young man Brian.
My sympathy goes to his family, this kind of death is very tough for you I know because there was no closure.

Brian was my husband, TJ's, fraternity brother at Florida State. We always loved being around Brian and have many fond memories of him. I spent many hours battling him at Nintendo's Wheel of Fortune (he was quite competitive), but what I remember most was laughing. Although we have not seen Brian in many years, we speak of him frequently, and we will miss him dearly. TJ and I are so sorry for your loss and our prayers are with you.

Although we didn't hang out and socialize away from work, I knew Brian for years and considered him to be a great friend. He had good humor, always smiling and was a class act. He was highly intelligent and always a good person to call for advise while building a case. He was dedicated and very successful in his profession but even greater success was reached by his kindness and willing to help others. His loss will be felt by the entire community now and in the future as I knew he was going to rise to the top. May your family live in peace knowing they raised a great human being. Bob

Brian Mattone is a name that will not easily be forgotten I was 13 years old when I met Brian and 18 when my case finally ended. Throughout those years Brian showed support in ways no one else could have. It was a hard time in my life yet he always managed to make me smile. He was more dedicated to my cause then anyone else I met. My heart goes out to all those affected by this tragic event. He was a one of a kind.

May 5, 2012

I have never met Brian Malone, or neither have I ever known him, but it was with great sadness & sympothy to his friends & family I read the article in the Lexington Herald & my deepest sympothy goes out to his family & co-workers. I am the County Clerk in Powell County & I do know that anybody who has worked with the public as long as he had & still had the respect as I am reading these posts had to be a wonderful, caring person! That takes an "awesome" person! "

Mr. and Mrs. Mattone and family,
May God be with you and comfort you throughout this extremely difficult time in your lives.
I had the pleasure of knowing and dealing with Brian through our jobs. Many is the time my phone rang and when I answered I heard Brian say, "Lindsey, my friend, how are you?" Brian was a dedicated prosecutor who performed his job with compassion for all. He truly was a first class person. The people of Fayette County and the Commonwealth of Kentucky have lost an excellent prosecutor, and person, this week.

Brian mentored me and taught me to never give up. He let me know when I did things right, and he was never afraid to tell me when I did things wrong...he tried my first case with me and made me feel as if I had the potential to be a great lawyer. Brian, the fact we recently reconciled and said everything we needed to say, and picked our friendship back up where we left off is a gift I will hold forever close to my heart. Thank you for years of guidance, mentoring, honesty and friendship.

Brian was such a good person and a pleasure to be around. I remember that whenever you saw him he always had a smile on his face. He was an asset to this community and will be sorely missed. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.
