Catherine Hammond Obituary

HAMMOND Catherine Corter Cooper, 91, died Monday, Jan 7, of complications from a fall. She was the only child of the late Essie Mae Burgan Cooper and Thomas Poe Cooper, Dean of the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, 1918-1952. She is survived by son Thomas Taylor Hammond (wife Sheilagh Rogan Hammond) and daughter Susan Elaine Hammond (husband Gerald Smith), both of Lexington, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Catherine was born June 8, 1921. She was a graduate of University High, Lexington, and held both B.S. and M.S. degrees from UK. She received the Human Environmental Sciences Centennial Laureate award from the College of Agriculture and was a University of Kentucky Fellow, a Scovell & Erikson Society Member and Phi Upsilon Omicron Honor Society Member. She was a lifelong member of Second Presbyterian Church. Over the years she served the church in many capacities: Chancel Choir member (58 years), pastoral search committees and, like her father before her, Chair of the Board of Trustees, to name a few. She served as head dietitian at Central Baptist Hospital, 1952-1976, and was a member of the American Dietetic Assn. Catherine's passions were many. She loved nature and was an ardent environmentalist. Her parents instilled in her a love of gardening and of all animals. She developed a special appreciation for orchids and helped form and lead both the Central Kentucky Orchid Society and the Bluegrass Orchid Society. She was a tremendous fan of UK sports and interested in many sports. She loved travel and for many years took annual trips with friends. Her skill as a photographer is obvious in her pictures of flowers, pets and faraway places. Her needlepoint, sewing, knitting and crewel embroidery grace the homes and bodies of family and friends. Lessons in piano and voice during her youth led Catherine to a love of classical music and to learn as an adult to play the organ with lessons from her friend Priscilla Hepburn. Like her music and her church, Catherine's friends and family sustained her in sad times and gave her many reasons to celebrate. All will miss her, but will carry in their hearts the lessons her love and her life taught them. Funeral services will be 2pm Friday at the Second Presbyterian Church with burial to follow in the Lexington Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-6pm Thursday at Milward -Southland. Contributions are suggested to the Lexington Humane Society, 1600 Old Frankfort Pike, Lexington, KY 40504. www.milwardfuneral.com

Tom and Susan - We are so sorry to learn of Catherine's passing. We have over 30 years of wonderful memories developed through our joint passion of growing orchids. We first met Catherine when we joined the CKOS and then worked with her in forming the BGOS. We have many wonderful memories of being with Catherine at AOS meetings and setting up displays at shows throughout Central Kentucky area. We are sorry that this is so late, but we are in Florida and just learned of her passing. Please know that our Prayers and Love are with you both and your families through this time. I am late in signing this book, I am sadddened to hear of Catherine's passing. I have also been a member of Second with her for years, and remember her with her with fondness. Our connection besides the church was UK where we both worked, and of course the Kentucky wildcats. I'm sorry to have heard about this too late to attend her funeral as I have moved to Covington 2 months ago. My heart goes out to you both.

Tom and Sheilagh, my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of endings. I know your fond memories will raise your spirits when your loss is felt. Though I had not met your Mother, I had heard wonderful stories and can see from the obituary that she was quite a remarkable lady who will be greatly missed in many circles of friends and family. Sending you my heartfelt condolences, Jennifer Ponder

Catherine was in the choir at Second Presbyterian Church, when I joined almost 35 years ago. I will remember Catherine for her wonderful sense of humor, the lovely orchids she brought in to share, her frustration when rehearsals coincided with UK Basketball games, her pride in her children and grandchildren, her love which she gave freely to all of us. She will be missed so much. I hope she gets a new choir robe up in heaven. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Tom and Susan,
Catherine and I called ourselves "twins" because we had the same birthday, only 36 years apart! She was not only a fellow choir member, but a lovely lady who generously shared her love of music, flowers, and animals. May the Lord comfort you with happy memories and with the peace of knowing that your angel has earned her wings.

Tom and Susan, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Catherine. I worked at Central Baptist Hospital and got to know her pretty well. She was such a sweet lady and I know that you will miss her.
I pray that GOD will embrace, each of, you with HIS loving arms and comfort you.
