David Cassidy Obituary

CASSIDY Dr. David Bede, 62, was killed on April 17, 2016 while bike riding from Paris to Lexington, KY. Born on May 8, 1953 in Williamsburg, Virginia, David was the 2nd of four sons of the late Dr Francis P. Cassidy and Joan W. Cassidy of Auburn, Massachusetts. Dr. Cassidy was a graduate of Columbia University and Tufts University School of Medicine with a specialty in interventional cardiology. He served his country as captain in the Army Medical Corps in Colorado, California and Texas, and was a proud veteran. Dr. Cassidy was a caring cardiologist who truly loved his job, working in private practice and affiliated with St. Joseph Hospital, serving patients in Central and Eastern Kentucky. He was beloved by his patients and staff alike, spending time with each patient listening and caring for every one. He worked with the American Heart Association promoting awareness throughout the region. As stated in a caring letter to colleagues from St. Joseph Hospital, "Dr. Cassidy not only touched many lives, he saved them." He was active in Christ Church Cathedral serving as communion minister and lector, and was a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew. As an active environmentalist and naturalist, David worked as a passionate executive committee member of The Lower Howard's Creek Nature and Heritage Preserve, with the Nature Conservancy and Appalachian Mountain Club. Many of his friends enjoyed his hand needlepointed gifts, and he also spent his time hiking, skiing, running, gardening and cooking. He was an avid cyclist as a member of the 'Zombies', currently training for a 100 mile bike race in Chattanooga. Dr. Cassidy is survived by his children Zachary Dunn Cassidy of Denver, Colorado, Darcy Colleen Cassidy of New York, New York, and Bryan Irwin of Denver, Colorado; brothers Neil Cassidy of Berkeley, California, Peter Cassidy of London, England, and Nevan Cassidy of New Hampshire; the mother of his children Karma Clara Bryan of Lexington; and his sweetheart Lynn Thompson Erickson, Lexington. The family extends special thanks to dear friends Dermot Halpin, Ben Cowan, Fred Coates, Claire Sipple, Melissa Wilson, Rick Ford, Sheila and Joe Ferrell for their encouragement and support of David over the years. The funeral service will be held in Lexington at Christ Church Cathedral on Friday, April 22, at 11am. A Celebration of Life will be held from 12pm to 2pm at 210 North Broadway, the Dr. Thomas Hunt Morgan House (formerly Women's Club of Central Kentucky.) In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be made to Christ Church Cathedral, Lower Howard's Creek Nature and Heritage Preserve or the Nature Conservancy. www.milwardfuneral.com

Although memories of the richness of David's special gifts are not forgotten after many years, it is always good to have them brought forward each year.

Five years ago today we lost David. To me, he was a faithful lifelong friend. Our high school class will gather in September to celebrate our 50th reunion, and though I have not attended since the 5th reunion, I have decided to show up to honor David and the other 40 or so classmates we have lost. Rest in peace, dear friend. Your memory is a blessing.

The first Earth Day was in part organized by David at Auburn High School. It's hard to believe that was 50 years ago....May we always remember David and his great spirit of conservation at a time when it was not a popular topic.

Three years ago David was taken from us suddenly, and as summer draws near, I still unconsciously await his phone call or text, as he always made a point of stopping in for a visit when he was back East from Kentucky, mostly in summer. It's hard to accept that he will not be stopping by again. I will miss David forever, one of the most vibrant lovers of life I have known. At this time of remembrance, I pray for his brothers, his children, his friends, and all who knew and loved him.

When I reached David by telephone for the last time, he was parked in his car, waiting for his beloved to emerge from a nearby house, perhaps one of her listings. We talked for around half an hour. He sounded so happy that I reported the incident to two of his other high school teachers.

David was an exceptional student in an extraordinary class of young people whom I was privileged to know in high school. Happily, he continued to stay in touch until a year ago and will surely remain a presence in the lives of all who knew him.

My Dad was one of Dr Cassidy's first patients in 1990. He took extra time and care with him. He passed in his sleep at the age of 64 in 1995. Dr Cassidy was really upset at our loss and said Dad had left a lasting impression with him...well we say the same about David. Jane Beam Johnson

My heartfelt condolences to David's brothers and all the family, as well as David's patients, colleagues, and friends. Dave and I grew up together in Auburn, Massachusetts. We met in kindergarten and graduated from high school together. I also saw him a number of times during his sojourn in California as a young Army doctor at the Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco. I have lots of fond memories. He was a smart, lively, and audacious guy. It's like a bright light has been extinguished.

In my current employment as a transportation planner in state government, I take a professional interest in bicycle transportation. With Dave's accident, planning for bicycles has taken on a new resonance for me. Cyclists in Kentucky could honor Dave by helping local and state governments pass bicycle safety legislation, build complete streets, and improve roadways with designated bike lanes.

I can't believe he's gone -- that caring, compassionate intelligence. Too soon was he taken from the world!

I shall never forget first meeting Dr. Cassidy. A new RN at the time he sensed my uncertainty and graciously took time to teach. As years rolled on he continued to always encourage me to grow both personally and professionally. Many conversation we had with his advise being to advance my degree " because you will be going places". I sought his council on a career move and received the nicest reference letter in answer.
My prayers go out to his family. Thank you for the sacrifices you made allowing him serve and care for his surrounding community.

David and I grew up together in Auburn, Massachusetts, and the rich storehouse of sometimes tragic but mostly comical memories of events and people from our childhood and youth have been foundational to our individual and shared identities. David was instrumental in introducing me to my wife Carol 40 years ago in Maine (see attached picture), and in spite of geographical separation, thankfully we kept in close touch over the many intervening years. He was one of my closest and most faithful friends, and we shared many deep confidences along this great, though much too brief, journey together. Like all of us, David was far from perfect, but he had a heart of gold, a firm and childlike faith in God, and a fierce and unshakable love for his children. I am sure he drew on these personal qualities in caring for his patients. I am grieving, remembering, and praying with his family, friends, and patients as you gather to mourn this huge loss and celebrate David's life. With love and blessings, Rev. Dr. Thomas John (Tom) Hastings, Princeton, NJ
