Elizabeth Allen Obituary

Elizabeth Clark Allen, 82, died Sunday May 11, 2003 in Lake Worth, Florida. She was the beloved daughter of George and Jane (Watkins) Allen and a great granddaughter of John McMurtry, builder and architect of Lexington, Kentucky. Elizabeth was born in Manhattan and moved with her family to Leonia, New Jersey. She graduated from Barnard College with a major in Latin and a minor in Greek, winning the Tatlock Prize in Latin. Upon her move to Florida in 1960, she remained a legal secretary. With a love of family history, she enjoyed researching in the Palm Beach County Genealogical Society Library, West Palm Beach, and served as president. She was active in the Seminole Chapter of NSDAR, the government food distribution program, was a tutor-trainer in the literacy program and president of the Palm Beaches Chapter of Professional Secretaries International. Elizabeth moved to Lexington, the home of her Watkins forebears, where she was 1994 Volunteer of the Year at TV station KET. She was also a volunteer at Hunt-Morgan House, active in RSVP and in the Lexington Chapter, NSDAR, helping at the KY DAR John Fox, Jr. Library in Paris. In Lexington she became a member of the National Society of Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America. She had recently returned to Florida. Elizabeth leaves her sister, Jane McMurtry Allen, who loved her dearly; five cousins, Frank Rhead Allen of Farmington, Utah, Leila Allen Alexander of Salt Lake City, Utah, Jeanne Savage Pete of Delaware, Godfrey Hamilton Savage of New Hampshire, David Cornelius McMurtry of Lexington, and many wonderful friends in Kentucky and Florida. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at Lexington Cemetery by Leigh Bowman and Katherine Roark. Kerr Brothers Funeral Home-Main Street is in charge of arrangements. Elizabeth loved her Kentucky, its Wildcats and horses. I will miss my dear friend, but I am thankful for the time she was able to spend in Florida near her sister.
