James Lawrence "Jim" ROSE obituary, Lexington, KY

James ROSE Obituary

ROSE James Lawrence "Jim", 73, died in Lexington, KY, on Dec 19, 2011, of complications from a recent heart attack. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Judy Sizemore Rose, and by his son, James F. "Jamie" Rose (and his wife, Kris) and by his daughter, Sonya Rose Hiler (and her husband, Ken), all of Lexington, KY. He was preceded in death by his son, Dwayne Scott Rose. He is also survived by eight grandchildren (Scarlett Rose, Lauren Rose, James E. Rose, Clay Rose, Neil Rose, Matt Rose, Kaelyn Hiler and Scott Hiler) and by three step-grandchildren (West Hyler, Lyndie Hiler Carneal and Kim Hiler Ford). Mr. Rose was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Lexington. He is a graduate of Berea Foundation High School and attended Berea College and the University of Kentucky. In 1985, Mr. Rose received an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of the Cumberlands. Mr. Rose was born in Clay County, KY, where he began his business career by starting a small coal company in 1959. Through internal growth and external acquisitions, he grew the coal business dramatically over the following three decades. Upon his retirement in Nov, 1993, the aggregate production and marketing capabilities of these companies made them one of the top three producers of coal in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. His companies received numerous national awards for operating the safest coal mines and for having the best mine rescue team in the United States. In 1978, Mr. Rose entered the banking business by acquiring a bank in his hometown of Manchester, KY. He formed a bank holding company, United Bancorp of Kentucky, Inc., and acquired seven additional banks located in London, Danville, Nicholasville, Richmond, Versailles, Corbin and Harlan. United Bancorp of Kentucky, Inc. was merged with National City Corporation in 1995. Although not a part of United Bancorp of Kentucky, Inc., Mr. Rose separately acquired Bank of Lexington & Trust Company in 1983 and subsequently sold it to Liberty National Bank & Trust Company of Louisville (now JPMorgan Chase Bank, NA). Throughout his life, he has been active in a number of civic and charitable organizations. Mr. Rose has served on the Board of Trustees of the University of Kentucky, Centre College of Kentucky and Lees College as well as the Albert B. Chandler Medical Center at the University of Kentucky. He was a founding member of the Commonwealth Endowment for Kentucky Educational Television. Mr. Rose also served as a member of the State Investment Commission for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He has also served as a member or director of numerous trade associations involving the coal and banking industries. Mr. Rose devoted immeasurable time to the Lexington Christian Academy, where he was instrumental in the development, finance and construction of the 75-acre "Rose Campus" on Reynolds Road in Lexington, KY. Visitation will be from 1-6pm on Thu, Dec 22, 2011, in the Chapel at Lexington Christian Academy, 450 W. Reynolds Road, Lexington, KY 40503. A funeral service will begin at 6pm after the visitation. A private burial will take place at the A.R. Dyche Memorial Park in London, KY, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Scott Rose Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 5001, London, KY 40745.

Judy, I'm so sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I wish I could have visited with the family more. Back in the 60s, Mother, Daddy, and I visited you in Manchester. Jim, Daddy, and the boys were doing 'guy' things; you, Mother, Sonya, and I went to the Piggly Wiggly. I still remember that visit and always will...we had so much fun that day. Daddy really enjoyed fellowship with you and Jim on the last visit...singing and playing. Praise the Lord we have the hope of spending eternity with him. I hope to see you soon. Love, Chandra

When I was around 14. I met the Roses. Sonya and I hit it off immediately and they became family. Not to this day has anything touched me as deeply as standing for 4 hours in thousands of people to hug the Roses when Scott left us. Now I wait to show the respect that only presence can offer. You all are part of my history and who I am. I love you so. My heart is lifted up to Jesus for peace and healing at this time of loss.

The accolades given to Jim Rose in print this week are well-deserved. His accomplishments in the business, sports and political worlds were well-known to anyone who paid attention in Kentucky during the past 40 years or so. I remember a time before all that, though, where he was just a young Clay Countian who exhibited uncommon abilities in seemingly everything he was interested in – which was a lot. As a boy I played drums in his little band and was amazed that someone in Manchester could play the piano like that. Later, a teenage friend and myself were motoring down Lake Cumberland in a little boat and came up on a gigantic steel house boat that was being built right on the shore. We coasted to the shore and there was Jim, with a welder's torch in his hand, single-handedly building this behemoth that he himself had designed. So, no one in our neck of the woods was surprised when he went on to bigger things and was successful at them to an almost unprecedented degree. Even with all that, though, this man who hobnobbed with presidents, famous sports figures, and industry magnates never forgot us Clay Countians when it came time to throw a party at his and Judy's beautiful home in London. I'm sure Judy will agree that there will never be another like him.
