I enjoyed several long visits with Jerry here at Brookdale. I will miss having someone like Jerry to talk about the Bible.

Jerry's life and work has meant so much to me since I was a young man. It was his class on sacramental theology at Asbury that launched my deep interest in that topic. It was his encouragement for me to continue liturgical studies that helped get me to a doctoral program in that subject. And it was his encouragement for me to apply for the opening at Asbury that brought me back to that school as a professor. Honestly, I'm not sure where I would be today if it was not for the work and witness of this kind, great teacher and friend.

I admired him as my professor at Asbury. As an international student, he helped me adjust to what is expected in seminary life. Thanks, Dr. Mercer.

In the short while I knew Mr. Jerry and his sweet family I was blessed to witness their genuine love and kindness towards others. You could not have a bad day if he was around! He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered in our community.

Dr. Mercer was one of THE most influential profs for me at Asbury. He helped form my view of sacraments and also gave me an appreciation for all genuine expressions of Christian worship.
His love for Jesus was contagious!
