Leigh Campbell Obituary

HARLAN - Leigh F. Campbell, 71, of Lexington, KY, passed away on Monday, January 13, 2014. Those who knew Leigh will appreciate the loss of this special woman. She was born in Ashland, KY, to the late Dr. C. Wayne and Elwanda Franz. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Kenneth D. Campbell and her son Tyler W. Callihan. She is survived by her son Dr. Richard L. Callihan of Cincinnati, OH, daughter Elizabeth L. Comer of Raleigh, NC, step-daughters Merry Tucker of Lee's Summit, MO and Jennifer Campbell of Overland Park, KS, brother Jeffrey W. Franz of Ashland, KY and grandchildren Amanda Mann of Raleigh, NC, Spencer and Cameron Callihan of Raleigh, NC and Garrett Tucker of Lee's Summit, MO. Leigh was a source of inspiration and courage to all of us during her illness and she died peacefully at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lexington, KY, in the inpatient Hospice Care Center. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff and doctors who cared for her during the last week of her celebrated life. Leigh never got to enjoy her retirement which she so excitedly looked forward to, having to medically retire from Dow Chemical Company one year ago due to her illness. Her career with Union Carbide and Dow Chemical spanned nearly 30 years after graduating with a chemistry degree from Texas A&M University while Kenneth was completing his doctoral degree in catalytic chemistry. She did, however, live her life to the fullest traveling often to visit or vacation with family in the recent years. Many knew of her passion for finding and refinishing antiques of all types. She was quite the craftswoman at lovingly restoring antique furniture to its original glory. Her attention to detail defined her. She will be dearly missed. Visitation will be at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home, 122 N. Cumberland Ave., Harlan, KY 40831, on Saturday, January 18th from 11:30am until the time of the service at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148. Mount Pleasant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. It is hard to believe it has been one year. I miss my buddy, the long phone chats, the laughter, the caring and appreciation that were so much of Leigh's personality.

As Leigh used to say when she called me "This is the other Lee" I miss you everyday. I think of how you inspired me in so many ways. You were a heck of a lady.

I will miss Leigh everyday-I already do. This woman inspired me in so many ways. She was so inspirational. She wanted her friends to push for their goals. She not only shared her life with her friends but she also shared our lives. I am thankful to have known her. She was a diamond in my crown of friends. I'll love her always.
