BEGLEY Leila (Feltner), 95, of Austin, IN passed away at 1:55pm on Sun, May 9, 2010 at Scott Memorial Hospital in Scottsburg, IN. Born Jan 5, 1915 in Hyden, KY, she was the daughter of the late Felix C. and Ona (Maggard) Feltner. Mrs. Begley married Elmer Begley in 1941. They celebrated 29 wonderful years together before he passed away on Sep 18, 1970. She moved from Hyden, KY to Austin, IN in 1975. Mrs. Begley graduated from Buckhorn High School in Buckhorn, KY and from Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College. She was a retired Home Economics teacher. She taught for 30 years in Leslie County. She served as an Assistant Secretary of State in Kentucky, an office she held until Sep 21, 1970, when Governor Louie B. Nunn appointed her to her husband's position following his death. She served as the first appointed woman of Secretary of State from Sep 21, 1970 - Feb 2, 1971, when she resigned the position and again assumed the role of Assistant Secretary of State. She was a member of Hyden Presbyterian Church, attended Austin Methodist Church, and enjoyed cooking, sewing and was an exceptional seamstress. Survivors include three children, Mrs. Carolyn (Gil) Daley of Lexington, KY, Elmer "Sonny" Begley Jr of Hyden, KY, Mrs. Louise (Jim) Hume of Austin, IN, five grandchildren, Cindy McGeoch of Dallas, TX, Gil Lane Daley of Fort Worth, TX, Bryan Daley of Lexington, KY, Chris Hume of Lexington, KY, Amy Hume of Lawrence, KS, seven great grandchildren, Catherine McGeoch of Dallas, TX, twins, Alexandra and Caroline McGeoch of Dallas, TX, Caelin Hume of Lexington, KY, Sophie Daley of Lexington, KY and Amelia Daley and Lane Daley of Ft. Worth, TX, two brothers, Dillard Feltner of Akron, OH, Herbert Feltner of Indianapolis, IN, four sisters, Kathleen Lewis of Hyden, KY, Faye Feltner of Louisville, KY, Jean Feltner of Louisville, KY, Betty Leggett of Eddyville, KY. A brother, Denver Feltner, two sisters Fern Elam and Elsie Baird preceded her in death. Pastor Stan Mohler will conduct funeral services at 4pm on Wed, May 12, 2010 at Adams Funeral Home in Crothersville. Friends may visit the family on Wed, May 12, 2010 from 5-8pm at Adams Funeral Home in Crothersville. The Second Funeral service will be conducted by Pastor Billie Joe Lewis at Hyden Presbyterian Church on Fri, May 14, 2010 at 1pm. Visitation will be prior to the service from 11am-1pm. Burial will follow at Hurricane Cemetery in Hyden, KY. The Dwayne Walker funeral Home in Hyden, KY is in charge of services in Kentucky. Memorial donations may be given in memory of Leila to Hyden Presbyterian Church and The Elmer and Leila F.
