Letita Gilliland Obituary

WILMORE - Letita Fawn Walton Gilliland, 51, beloved wife of Bruce Travis Gilliland of 27 years and mother to Arin Hadley Walton Gilliland, 19, and Saylor Walton Gilliland, 10. Letita passed on April 16 surrounded by her family in her home in Wilmore, KY, after valiantly battling colon cancer over the last three years. Born in Phoenix, AZ, she is the eldest daughter of Kenneth Ray and Cynthia Lou LaVerne Rothwell Walton, sister to Wendy Knox (Tom) and Krystal Davis (Mike). She is also survived by numerous extended family. She thrived on watching her kids sporting activities and was extensively involved with the teams at West Jessamine High School and Lexington Football Club. She was co-owner of Professional Hair Designers Salon in Lexington, KY since its inception in 1998. She attended Southland Christian Church and Jessamine Christian. She was a member of Bitburg Alumni Association and a graduate of Bitburg American High School, Bitburg, Germany, class of 1979. A pillar of her family and community, she enjoyed quilting, antiques, gardening and providing expert salon service to her clients, many of whom she formed lasting friendships. As she has touched so many with her legacy of love and generosity, her spirit will continue within our hearts. A memorial service will commence on Saturday April 21st at Southland Christian Church in building B, 5001 Harrodsburg Road, Nicholasville, KY 40356. Officiated by Chaplain Lemuel Boyles of New Mexico and Pastor Rob Clark from Jessamine Christian Church. Family will receive visitors from 10-11am with service to follow at 11am. A reception will be held immediately following the service. Donations can be made to The Saylor Gilliland Educational Fund in care of First Southern National Bank, or to The Arin Gilliland Soccer Complex in care of the city of Wilmore, 335 E, Main Street 40390. Letita's favorite flowers are orchids, lilies, hydrangeas, and plumerias. Online guestbook at www.BettsandWestfuneralhome.com

Dear Letita's family,
What a special person your daughter was. 23 years ago I asked a woman I saw in Kroger, "Who cut your hair(s)? Your cut is so beautifully shaped." She told me that her name was Letita Gilliland. She had to write it out for me 'cause I couldn't understand the name. I have always been amazed that I would have such a talented hair dresser and friend. Letita had not had children when I first met her and when I asked her if she would she thought that she probably wouldn't. She felt that life was moving too fast to stop for that part of her life to be added. Next thing we knew, she was pregnant. We were all excited and it didn't seem that she missed a day of work but just kept on working both lives. What love she had for her beautiful children. She told me that she didn't know that she could love anyone soooo much.
She kept me up to date with pictures on the mirror. In the Bible, King David said when he was old, that he would go the way of the world.
(He was speaking of death which we all have to face.)
I will miss her and you all will be in my heart and prayers.
Love to you all,
Suzanne and Charlie Pond

Only in such a small world, two people who are almost neighbors go to high school together, grow up, grow apart, then marry two friends and become friends all over again, X 2! I went to HS with Bruce, decorated Letita's salon in Lexington, met and married a sales rep who sold paint to Straitline (Bruce). You guys never left our thoughts. We'll get to reminisce about it when we reunite in Heaven one day, and exclaim what a "small world" it is all over again! God bless you all.

For 30+ years Letita was my friend. Her career was to make people beautiful on the outside. Little did she know her best and truest gift was helping them be beautiful on the inside. My tears and prayers are with all who love her. I take solace here: "Your sun will never set again, and your moon will wane no more, the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your days of sorrow will end."

Wife, mother, daughter, sister,co-worker,stylist, friend, child of God, Angel in heaven...Letita wore many hats and gave her all to every one. I was her client and friend and watched in awe as she fought her battle with cancer. She was a warrior, and she lived life to the fullest. Her children were her greatest joy and she fought to keep their life as normal as possible even as she fought every day for her own. In the movie the Last Samuari, the emporer asked Tom Cruise's character how the Samuari had died. His answer was , I will tell you how he lived...this, too, is Letita's story. How she lived, I loved and admired her and miss her. Light and love, eternally , Harriette Gill
