Malcolm Lambing Obituary

Malcolm Lambing, Jr.

February 23, 1934 - September 28, 2025

Versailles, Kentucky - Malcolm (Mac) Elwyn Lambing, Jr., age 91, was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on February 23, 1934. His mother never received a more wonderful birthday, as she and Mac continued to celebrate their shared birthdays each year. With deep gratitude for a life well-lived, he passed away peacefully at home in Versailles, KY, on September 28, 2025. He was born to the late Malcolm and Clara Tremain Lambing. He was predeceased by his younger brother, David Lambing, and daughter-in-law Jayne McCann Lambing.

Mac leaves behind his loving and devoted wife, Susan, and three children, Charles Lambing, James Lambing (married to Kellie), and Elizabeth Frombach (married to Dana), each of whom he loved beyond measure. His five grandchildren, who brought him great pride and joy, are Dr. Tyler Lambing (Dr. Megan Gooch), Seth Lambing, Preston Frombach, Tiffany Christie (Patrick), and Jessica Frombach. Special nieces and nephews who were always close to his heart include Fredrick Lambing (Valerie), Jennifer Lambing, James Walling, Susan Perkins (Todd), Danielle Mullins (Zach), Elizabeth Phillips (Liam), Mary Catherine Gaberon (Tanner), and Alex Perkin (Cordelia), as well as their children.

Following graduation from Mercersburg Preparatory School, Mac went on to graduate from Dartmouth College. He then pursued his MBA at the University of Pittsburgh and while serving in the U.S. Army.

Mac built a lifetime career in banking, serving as President and CEO in Erie, PA, and later in Galesburg, IL. These leadership roles provided opportunities for community involvement, of which Mac was very proud.

Respected as a visionary leader in Pennsylvania, he had the honor of serving on the Long-Range Planning Committee for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, appointed by then-Governor William Scranton. As president of the Public Broadcasting Board of NW Pennsylvania, he brought economist Milton Friedman to Erie, achieving the highest fundraising goal ever realized at that time. Service as a Director on the Federal Reserve Board of Pittsburgh was also fulfilling.

In Illinois, Mac continued service outside the corporation as a Director on the U. S. Chamber of Commerce Small Business Board.

Hiking, especially in the Tetons, racquetball, squash, tennis, fine wine, good single malt Scotch, and delicious food were things that made Mac smile, especially when enjoyed with family and good friends. Stimulating conversation on nearly any topic was always a joy, especially if military history could be woven into the conversation. He believed he achieved a stellar education so that he could enjoy a lifetime of learning. Reading multiple books during the same period, including works of science, fiction, and history, was a routine practice to maintain intellectual engagement.

Upon retirement in Lexington, KY, in 1992, Mac continued his thirst for learning and community involvement. Having had no formal history course throughout his education, he took every history course offered at UK through Ollie, and then he was appointed to the UK Osher Lifelong Learning Board. He was a member of the Civil War Roundtable. As an active leader at Second Presbyterian Church, where he found solace and community, he served as an elder and then on committees at the Presbytery level.

Retirement included international travel to nearly 100 countries over the years, where lasting friendships and indelible memories were made. As Mac said often to Susan, "We had a good run."

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in honor of Malcolm to Second Presbyterian Church, 460 E. Main Street, Lexington, KY 40507, or Bluegrass Care Navigators, 634 Teton Trail, Frankfort, KY 40601.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 3rd at Second Presbyterian Church, 460 E. Main Street, Lexington, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Earlier today

I didn´t know Mr Lambing but have read his obituary. What an interesting, enriching and thought provoking life he led. I hope he has left others, whom he has mentored, the vision and wisdom as to how to live life and make the world a better place. I would have loved to have been able to know him.
