Martha Sweat Obituary

Martha Francis Washington Sweat, a native of Owen County was born on March 5, 1940 to the late Wesley and Mattie Washington. She departed this life on January 15, 2003 after a long illness. After relocating to Lexington with her family in 1945, Martha professed her faith in Christ and was baptized into the fellowship of the Evergreen Baptist Church under the Pastorship of Rev. G.M. Smith. Martha was united in Holy Matrimony on October 5, 1959 to James H. Sweat. During her 43 years of marriage to James Sweat they accomplished much success with James Sweat Moving Company. Martha wore many hats within this establishment ranging from office manager to dispatcher from bookkeeper to administrative assistant. They were the proud parents of six devoted children. One of whom preceded her in death, Jerome Sweat. She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory , three daughters, Retta (Robert) Guy, Salisbury, Maryland, Lisa Johnson, and Karen (Harry) Lymon of Lexington; one son, Robert Sweat and one step son, Gary Sweat of Lexington; five sisters-in-law, Mayme (Robert) Chenault, Martha (George) Crutcher, Paris, Kentucky, Mary Campbell, Dayton, Ohio, Peggy Brooks, Richmond, KY and Evelyn Black, Cinn., OH; eight grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends (Special friends) Helen Downing, Frances Woods, Lillian Wright, Ronnie Shelby and Jeralene Greenlee. Funeral services 7 p.m. Sunday, Evergreen Baptist Church, Rev. G.M. Smith officiating. Burial 10 a.m. Monday at Evergreen Memory Gardens. Visitation 5 p.m. Sunday at the church until time of service. Smith & Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Guest book at Legacy.com.
