Lexington, Kentucky - Dr. Melvin Earl Liter (US Army, Lt. Col., retired), beloved Husband, Father, and Poppa, passed away August 17, 2023, in Lexington, KY, at the age of 78.
Mel earned his bachelor's from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy in 1968 and graduated magna cum laude with a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of the Pacific School of Pharmacy, Stockton, CA in 1984.
Mel's 20+ year distinguished Army career included tours of duty in Kentucky, Texas, Washington DC, California, Hawaii, and Missouri. He pioneered clinical pharmacy programs and was an adjunct professor at UoP and the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Many considered him the "Father of Clinical Oncology Pharmacy" in the Army. After the Army, Mel joined the faculty of the UK College of Pharmacy and worked at the VA hospital for 13 years. He served in many national professional associations and editorial boards, receiving several fellowships and awards. He enjoyed square dance calling, auctioneering, watching westerns and mysteries, spending time with family, giving great hugs, and talking and joking with his cousins.
His parents were Cliff and Bernie Liter of Bedford, KY. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Cherry Rodgers Liter; children, Michael Liter (Deborah), Scott Liter (Amanda); 6 precious grandchildren, Simon, Ian, Ashlyn, Lauryn, Eli, and Andrew; brother Field Wayne Liter (Linda), sister Diane Liter Melvin; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Mel put his faith in Jesus Christ at a young age and often said he was ready and knew where he was going.
