Oakie Newsome Obituary

Oakie G. Newsome, DMD, 65, husband of Patsy Montgomery Newsome, died Friday, January 10, 2003 at the Hospice Care Center with his wife and children at his side, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He practiced dentistry at 540 E. Main Street from 1967 until he retired in 1999. A native of Melvin, KY he was born November 29, 1937 a son of the late Cecil and Hazel Akers Newsome. He had been a member of Porter Memorial Baptist Church for thirty years and was currently a member of Highlands Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army, 100th Division as a Second Lieutenant. He graduated from Wheelwright High School, Floyd Co. in 1955, Eastern Kentucky University in 1960, and was a member of the first class to graduate from the UK College of Dentistry in 1966. He served his internship at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. He was a past president of the Bluegrass Dental Association, a member of the Kentucky Dental Association, and the American Dental Association. He was elected to the International College of Dentistry, a former president of the UK College of Dentistry Alumni Association, a member of the UK Development Council, Lexington Country Club, UK Alumni Association, and a UK Fellow. He loved snowskiing and was an avid golfer. In addition to his wife of thirty nine years, survivors include a son and two daughters, Bradley B. (Laura) Newsome, Lexington; Melanie N. (Chuck) Stutenroth, Cincinnati; Dr. Dana N. (Mike) Corbett, Lexington; two sisters, Janet (Jim) Osborne, Louisville; Phyllis Jenkins, Lexington; seven grandchildren, Chase Stutenroth, Virginia Newsome, Spencer Stutenroth, Cassie Corbett, Will Stutenroth, Maggie Corbett, Andrew Newsome; mother-in-law, Germaine Saunders, Danville, VA; father-in-law, Robert L. Montgomery, Magnolia, NC; sister-in-law, Phyllis Newsome, Joliet, IL; two nephews and three nieces. He was preceeded in death by a brother, Robert G. Newsome; brother-in-law, John D. Jenkins, and his infant grandson, Robert Cecil Newsome. Services will be 1:30 PM Tuesday at Porter Memorial Baptist Church conducted by Rev. James K. Pierce with interment following in the Lexington Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 PM today at the W. R. Milward Mortuary - Broadway. Memorials may be made to the Oakie G. I was sorry to learn of the death of your husband and father. He was a very respected man in town and will be missed by the entire community. Dana now it all makes sense why you became a dentist, I know that with such a wonderful family and upbringing that you too will become highly respected in the community. Also I never knew you and Melanie were related until now.
