Robert SEXTON Obituary

SEXTON Dr. Robert Fenimore, executive director of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence and a long-respected education advocate, died Thu evening, August 26, 2010, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center following a struggle with cancer. He was born to Claude F. Sexton and Jane W. Sexton Jan 13, 1942. His passing is a deep loss not only to his family and friends, but to generations of children who did not know him and may not hear of him. Over 34 years, his work grew to include not only Kentucky schools, but the nation's. He believed passionately that all children could learn at high levels and that all parents could be empowered to know about and help their children's teachers and schools. He deeply respected the teaching profession and believed that teachers could also reach high levels on behalf of their students. He advocated for their respect among the professions and for higher salaries. He spent most of his career building the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence, an unusual and exceptional non-profit organization that reached around the Commonwealth to include parents and grandparents, educators, policy analysts, and politicians in strong organized efforts to improve Kentucky schools and universities. He was a civil, dedicated man who listened to all opinions, analyzed all available information and came forward with a vision, looking for paths to larger lives for the people of his beloved state. His persistence and passion for better education was in play until the moment of his passing. He was interested in and uplifted by experiences and friends from many arenas: the arts, the literary community, the legal profession, the culinary world, the world of news and journalism, and all things related to public policy, politics and history. He, with his wife Pam and children and friends, linked themselves to nature- to forests and birds, rivers, boats and fishing, hiking and exploring, especially the fascinating corners of Kentucky and Wyoming (Pam's native home), as well as the broader world of the United States and Europe. He was enamoured with fly-fishing and many of the country's great trout streams. Much of his deepest thinking was accomplished while standing in the midst of a cold river, wearing his waders, fly rod in hand. With great joy and attention, he collected the art of a diverse group of Kentucky artists and surrounded himself in home and office by their work and called many of them friends. He loved music, especially spirituals and Kentucky traditional and Bluegrass music, and actors and dancers of all stripes. He was avid reader of policy, history, well-crafted fiction, poetry, and enthusiastically talked about literature. He is survived by his 94 year-old mother Jane W. Sexton of Lexington, his wife of 25 years, Pamela Papka Sexton; one daughter, Rebecka Byrne Sexton of Chicago; one son, Robert Byrne Sexton, of San Jose, CA; three step-children, Ouita Papka Michel (Chris) of Midway; Paige Papka Richardson of Lexington; and Perry Aaron Papka of Frankfort and two granddaughters, Willa Dru Michel and Lily Kathryn Schade, and the mother of his children, Kathryn Johansson of Chicago. Along with family, he is survived by a close circle of beloved friends and caretakers, including three long-time brothers-in-spirit, Bob Lamson of Seattle, Hugh Straley of Seattle, and Russ Edgerton of Washington D.C. His work was made possible by the loyal and dedicated staff of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence, who became his extended family. Pam and all of Bob's children are grateful to them as well as too the large team of caring doctors and nurses who helped make his last year possible. A native of Louisville, Bob was a member of the first graduating class of Waggener High School, the first valedictorian and student body president. He held a bachelor's degree from Yale University and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Washington. He was a visiting scholar at Harvard University and the Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University and had been awarded honorary degrees from Berea College, Georgetown College, Bellarmine University and Eastern Kentucky University. Bob's many civic contributions included serving as a member of the board that created the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning in Lexington and on the boards of the Kentucky Long-Term Policy Research Center and the New Opportunity School for Women. He was a founder of the Kentucky's Governor's Scholars Program and of the Kentucky Center for Public Issues. His national board service included Editorial Projects in Education (publishers of Education Week and Teacher Magazine), the Education Trust, the Center for Teaching Quality, the Education Commission of the States and the American Association for Higher Education. He also served on advisory groups for several national foundations. A memorial service and tribute to Bob's life and career is planned for Oct 16, 2010. Memorials may be made to the Robert F. Sexton Legacy Fund, Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence, P.O. Box 1658, Lexington, KY 40588. www.milwardfuneral.com

Bob was a Kentucky education hero. As a reporter who covered the topic in the '80s, I watched him worked tirelessly to improve Kentucky schools, and he always was willing to help a reporter see more clearly through the fog. He helped with humor and grace. His legacy is large. My deep sympathy to the people of Kentucky and to his family for their loss.

I am so sorry for the loss to your family, but also to our great commonwealth. I did not know Bob personally, but did have a lot of first-hand experience with education reform. I ran a Family Resource Center under the first round of grants and saw the profound need and amazing benefits. This is one of the best changes in Kentucky in my lifetime. We should all be forever grateful, and we should all follow his example and do our best to serve others and our community.

Mr. Sexton was a great person. I remember being in the CIPL class of 2002 and he was one of our speakers..his words were so inspirational that they still are with me today! My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. God Bless!

In our roles at the Kentucky Education Association and the Department of Education, each of us had the opportunity to work with Bob on different projects. He always had a way of making sense of issues and was willing to discuss those which were important to us to help clarify and figure out the best course of action. We are heartbroken for the loss of such a dedicated advocate for improving Kentucky education. We feel honored to have known Bob as a colleague and a person. His passion, vision and sincerity will continue to inspire us always.

Bobby and I were childhood friends in St. Matthews, in the Springlee neighborhood across Browns Lane from where Waggener High School would later be. We did what kids did in the late '40s and early '50s. Very few people had TV's and those that did watched a test pattern until 5 or 6 o'clock followed by Kukla, Fran and Ollie and maybe Howdy Doody some time later. Football in the yard in the fall; baseball in the street in the spring. Snowball fights in the winter. Board games, chess tournaments organized by Mr Painter, comic books and reading real books when we got into school. We went our separate ways through high school though our parents probably kept the occasional bridge game going. We crossed paths again at Yale in 1960 and became reacquainted for that brief time. Years later I would read the newspaper with great interest about his work with the Prichard Committee. I admired his ability to keep strong positive influence continuing in his chosen field. And to do so beyond the age when many of us had retired and eased away from the various figurative battlegrounds that challenged us, fed our families and gave us shelter. I'm sorry you have left, Bobby. We who have known you will miss you.

Pam and family,
I didn't know Bobby as an educator, just as our cousin who came to be very dear to me in the time I was privileged to know him. He always had a smile on his face when here in Wyoming, and usually a fishing pole in his hand. I always looked forward to your visits, and he will be greatly missed by his WY cousins, John and I. He welcomed me to the family with open arms, a hug, and a smooch, snd I will always remember him and thank him for that. Our thoughts, prayers, and love, Pammy to you and yours.

Leonard and I are very sorry to learn that Kentucky and education have lost Bob Sexton. We've not lived in Lexington for many years, but we knew Bob when he first started with the Prichard Committee and have kept up with and admired his continuing determination to make better lives for Kentuckians through improving the education system.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Bobby and I first met in 1960 as freshmen at Yale and shared some youthful shenanigans best left to history, his passion. Many mutual friends were part of Frosh football (we both played a little) and in Beta Theta Pi. The core of those shortest, gladdest years of life emphasized. public service. Imbued with those values arising from his Louisville roots, Bob intensified that impulse as an undergraduate and, still a young man, epitomized the essence of dedication to the commonweal, most notably by midwifing and nurturing the Prichard Committee with its good works. Although our paths crossed rarely since those days, I shall remember affectionately his ready smile, his quiet, thoughtful counsel, and his unrelenting quest to strengthen learning for all. Applauding his life well lived, let us look to him in gratitude as a model for ourselves. I bid his spirit Godspeed in the next realm, whose souls will be better educated by his arrival. May his loved ones be at peace. John Hunsaker, Lexington

Bobby... it has been 50 years since we graduated from Waggener High School as members of its first graduating class. You have represented Waggener, the Jefferson Co. My husband and I had met Bob Sexton, but really knew him and his family through the eyes of my dear friend, Beverly Raimondo, who worked so closely with Bob for almost 20 years on the Prichard Committee. Kentucky has lost a great patriot of education, but Bob Sexton's life and work will live on through his beloved family and Prichard Committee.

Pam, I am so sad to hear about Bob. He was the strongest of educators and always stood for the children--the highest compliment we can pay. He will be sorely missed by all of us. Many blessings to you and your family as you begin the hard walk learning to live without him.

Bob and my recently deceased husband, Edward Norman Wilson (died May 24, 2010) were cut from the same cloth. Both were of the strongest integrety, both were lifelong learners, both were eager to share their knowledge and wisdom with others, yet only as others were willing to receive it, both were committed to serving their communities and the commonwealth. Our world has lost another of its finest, but what a legacy Robert Sexton has left us.
My most sincere sympathy to Pam, the family and all who had the privilege of knowing, working for a better world and loving Bob.

I cannot even begin to come up with the words to express my love and admiration for Bob Sexton. He gave me a chance to achieve more than I ever thought I would, he taught me more than I ever thought I would know and through Bob and our work, my children have gorwn to become successful, productive young men and citizens of the commonwealth. The state of Kentucky lost a state treasure the day Bob passed. The best we can give him is to continue his work and dedication to the children of this state. We are all richer for having known him and I consider myself positively blessed to be a part of his extended "family". My thoughts and prayers go to Pam and his children and grandchildren. May his legacy give you comfort in your time of grief. God Bless

Dear Pam and family,
My heart breaks for you, for all of us who were blessed to be Bob's friends, and for our Commonwealth. What a legacy Bob has left us all. The impact of his life of service will be felt for generations to come. His passion for quality education for our young people has inspired professional educators, legislators and other Kentucky leaders, parents, and students themselves. I pray that you can find comfort in the memories of a life well-lived. May God bless you and keep you in His care. With my love and prayers,

Bob basically gave me the chance to stay in school and become an educator by giving me the first job I ever had in college in the '70s. I think he intuitively knew I could not afford to stay there unless I had a job and loans to sustain me. I wasn't sure where to turn and he was my last hope. He not only gave me a job that would keep me in school, but he gave me dignity. Many see Bob as a great educator. He was certainly one of the best, but I see him as a great humanitarian. The way he treated people one on one was exceptional. This world would certainly be a better place if we had more Robert Sextons in it. May his legacy live on.

Bob Sexton was the most persistent advocate for better schools as there was anywhere in the nation. He listened well, charmed opponents, prodded supporters and stayed focused on the things that matter for Kentucky kids. He was a friend and a mentor. I miss him already, but he leaves a legacy that will live for a very long time.

On behalf of Bob's classmates and many friends in the Yale Class of 1964, I express deep sympathy to his family, friends, and co-workers. We admired his tireless work to improve the quality of education for the children of Kentucky, and regularly recognized him in our Class Notes (http://alumninet.yale.edu/classes/yc1964/notes/2010-09.htm). Bob will be remembered on our Class Website (www.yale64.org) and at a specical memorial service at our next reunion in 2014.

Pam and family-
Many generations of Kentuckians and many more to come will benefit from Bob's passionate belief in the importance of education in improving all aspects of our lives. His legacy lives on in the citizens who will now become even more insistent regarding his message that we need true tax reform to lift education to the priority it deserves.

Bob truly understood the importance of Gandhi's admonition to "Be the change you wish to see in the world." He lived his dedication to improving education for our children every day of his life and our world is better for having had him in it.

Bob Sexton brought vision, warmth, persistence, and diplomacy to Kentucky education. Without Bob KERA would have been much smaller or not at all. As KY's first Commisioner of Education from 1991 to 1995, it was my pleasure to work with Bob and enjoy his leadership and company. I offer my warm wishes for peace and strength to Pam and his family and friends.

To Bob's family ... you folks don't know me, I was just one of the very many Administrative Interns Bob introduced to government service back in 1972 or 73. He changed my life. I went on to Law School, and spent my 30+ year career primarily as a Public Defender, mostly defending people facing some stage of execution. None of that would have happened for me and those clients had it not been for Bob's dedication to young people beginning to find their way in the world. He will be sorely missed, and there's a spot in Kentucky's education that will never be filled as he filled it. I am very grateful for this Man's life, and so, so sorry for your loss.

Back in 1991 I had the pleasure of working for the Prichard Committee as one of its original Regional Coordinators. Bob Sexton was one of the most intelligent and well-spoken people I have ever me. It was great being part of his team and I will always remember him fondly.
