Lexington, Kentucky - Rowena Marie Garr Richardson was born the thirteenth of thirteen children born to the late Theodore and Katie (Gay) Garr on August 19, 1929 in Lexington, Ky. Rowena was born into a large, close knit, musical family. She grew up in Lexington, KY and graduated from Dunbar High School.
Rowena was an active member of Quinn Chapel AME Church in Lexington, KY for over 60 years, where she was a dedicated member of the Senior Choir and a member of the missionary society. In the late 1940s, she was a member of a singing group called The Angels of Mercy where they sang on the Onto Progress Radio Show every Sunday and performed in the community and outside of Lexington. She was also a member of the Garr ensemble which performed mostly at Quinn Chapel but also performed at several other venues throughout her lifetime.
She was a beloved wife, mother and homemaker, who loved to sing, sew, cook and dance. She loved to paint and was often teased that if someone stood too still for too long, she might paint you! She leaves to cherish her memory a brother Leonard (Germene) Garr of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Children; daughter, Alicia Heidorn (grandchildren, Heather Heidorn, Tiffany Lopez (Darwin) and Chris Heidorn, son, Allen Richardson Jr (Rebecca), (grandchildren Kara Hill, Lauren Purdom) daughter, Rosalind Irvine (James), (grandchildren, Keturah Taylor, Tarin Smith (Will), Si'mone Harkless (Jefferson) and Jameshea Payne), son Keith Richardson (Natasha Smith and Aaron Smith) and son Kim Richardson along with several great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, additional relatives and many friends including special friends Lutisha Coleman-Morton, Saundra Sleet and Jill Duncan.
