Stephen Oakes Obituary

Stephen Edward Oakes

April 10, 1979 - May 22, 2025

Prospect, Kentucky - Stephen Edward Oakes, age 46, passed away Thursday May 22, 2025. He was born April 10, 1979 to the late Harold Oakes and Rebecca Ann (Gordon) Oakes in Lexington, KY. He is survived by his wife, Rosa Yvonne Johnson-Oakes; his two precious sons, Lincoln Walter Oakes and Larson Henry Oakes; his mother, Rebecca Ann Oakes; three aunts, Johnny Lou Jones, Ruth McDowell, and Jeanette Williams; cousins, Peggy Degelow, Deborah Rougeau, and Larry Dale Jones; his mother-in-law, Ida Meg Johnson; and his brother-in-law, John Joseph.

Stephen was a loving husband, a caring and supportive father, and a guiding light in his family's life. He was very close to his two sons and especially enjoyed camping and building Legos with them. Stephen took great pride in his role as Cub Master for his son's Pack and his Eagle Scout achievement.

Stephen earned a Juris Doctorate in Law from the University of Kentucky. His interest in public service and law enforcement led him to a long and successful career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where he most recently served as Associate Division Counsel. His colleagues remember him as a man of principle and a staunch advocate for truth and justice. He was deeply devoted to his role as a public servant and to his FBI family, and his life is a testament to service with honor, compassion, and love. Stephen's sharp sense of humor brought laughter and levity to all who knew him.

A funeral service will be held Friday, May 30, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Morris & Hislope Funeral Home with FBI Chaplain David Buckham officiating. The Oakes family will receive friends on Friday at 12:00 p.m. Burial to follow in the Vaught Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the Oakes family requests that you honor Stephen's memory by donating to a college fund for Lincoln and Larson. Just wanted to send hugs and let you know you are all covered in our prayers. Stephen was our niece's boss and she always talked very fondly of how he treated all of his employees. We are grateful for how he touched her life! May God shelter you all in His loving arms and hold you especially close.

I am so very sorry to hear of Stephen's passing. He was my student in English Composition at Georgetown College, and it breaks my heart to know he has passed on so young. His alma mater is so proud of all that he accomplished in his life of service to his family, his community, and his country.
