Thomas Robert Layman

November 26, 1939 - October 30, 2025

Frankfort, Kentucky - Thomas R. Layman died peacefully at his residence on October 30, 2025. He was 85 years old. Tom was born on November 26, 1939. Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife, JoDee Layman. He is survived by his two daughters: Dessa Digeronimo, and Laura (Ryan) Sell. He has six grandchildren: Robert (Alison) Sell and Sydney Sell, Dominic (Harper), Dante, Dane, and Delaney DiGeronimo. He had one great-grandson, Cooper (son of Robert and Alison) Sell.

Tom was born in Short Creek Kentucky which is a small community in Grayson County. He moved as a young child to Louisville where he graduated from DuPont Manual High School and was the recipient of the State Highway Scholarship in Civil Engineering at the University of Kentucky. In 1959, he married JoDee and in 1964 he graduated from UK with a BS in Civil Engineering. During his career at the Kentucky Department of Transportation, he was involved in Construction, Design, Urban and Regional Planning, and at the Division of Programming, he acted as the Director of Bridges, and the Assistant State Highway Engineer for Construction. During his tenure with KDOT, he was actively involved with the Capital Chapter of the Kentucky Society of Engineers and Kentucky Association of Transportation Engineers. Tom retired from the Kentucky Department of Highways in 1990 after a very successful career and went to work for American Consulting Engineers. He was the project manager for the Louisville Bridges Project, the extension of Newtown Pike into downtown Lexington and the financial feasibility study for I-66 across Kentucky.

Tom will be buried in the Graefenberg Community Cemetery in a family setting with his wife, JoDee. A memorial of life will be at St. Paul Methodist Church, 1800 Louisville Road, where he was an active member, on Saturday November the 8th. The visitation is from 10 to 12 p.m., with the funeral at 12. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Hospice of the Bluegrass (Bluegrass Navigators). www.ClarkLegacyCenter.com
