William Witt Obituary

WITT William O., M.D., 73, husband of LeAnne Witt, on June 20, 2020 gently closed the door behind him. Born Mar. 18, 1947 in Bemidji, MN, he was the son of the late Ray Harry and Gloria Savage Witt. Growing up in Northern Minnesota, Bill graduated from the University of Minnesota where he earned a B.A. in Microbiology and Doctor of Medicine degree. He completed his residency in anesthesiology, training at both the University of Kentucky and the University of Colorado. He attained board certification in Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine, and Pain Management. He spent his career at the University of Kentucky Department of Anesthesiology, where he served as Chairman and Professor, in addition to founding the interventional pain management fellowship. Following retirement from the university, he founded and directed a practice at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital. Bill was also a gifted speaker and thoroughly enjoyed giving lectures across the country and around the world for names such as Medtronic, Boston Scientific, and Pfizer, to name a few. He was very well respected by his peers and colleagues and loved all of his patients as if they were family. A true renaissance man, Bill had a zeal for life and saw every challenge as an opportunity, from working on the Rocky Mountain Ski Patrol to leading his band, Stampede, on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. Of all of his hobbies, his greatest joy was being on the water with friends and family, from the shores of Lake Bemidji to the coves of Lake Cumberland. As impressive as all of his accomplishments were, Bill would say that his greatest accomplishment was his family, in which he served as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Survivors other than his wife include four sons, Andrew William (Traci) Witt of Crestwood, KY, Daniel William (Ellen) Witt of Louisville, KY from his first marriage, William Savage (Michelle) Witt, MD, and Charles James Witt; one daughter, Alexa Nicole Witt, all of Lexington, KY; three grandchildren, Lenna Witt, Lillian Witt, and Davis Witt; one brother, Charles Ray (Valerie) Witt; and one sister, Virginia Witt (Myron) Karki. Funeral services will be held 1 pm Sat., June 27 at First United Methodist Church, 200 W. High St., Lexington, KY by Rev. Todd Nelson and Rev. Mike Powers. Visitation will be 4-8 pm Fri., June 26 at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd. "Never slam the door when you leave, just close it gently behind you."

I met Dr. Witt when I came to Lexington and UK in 2004 with my father Jerry Lewis - as part of the Medtronic Inc "Tame the Pain" campaign for raising awareness of pain intervention therapies; for which my dad was the national mouthpiece. From the first moment we stepped on campus Bill Witt greeted us with a welcoming hand and a sincere smile. Though our visit was brief -the two days we spent with Dr Witt and his staff were surely memorable. He was a kind and dear man and I am very sorry for your loss. I will always remember him as a caring and benevolent person. He has certainly earned a special place in God's safekeeping.

Most sincerely,
-Anthony J Lewis

I still miss Dr. Witt. It still makes me very sad that Dr. Witt, who was my doctor for many years saved me (and sang some great songs right before your anesthesia kicked in) was taken from his family, his patients and his unique medical practice way too soon. To his family, I hope you know there are so many that will never forget him and still mourn his passing.

I am sorry to learn so belatedly of Bill´s passing. I am fortunate to have visited with him in early 2019, reviving our friendship from the time he was my law student at UK. He absolutely was a Renaissance man, the most accomplished person I have known in my life. It was a privilege to be his friend.

Dr. Witt was the person who started me down the career path I am on. He took a chance on me, supported my efforts, and trusted me. He was the first as I was fresh out of school. Mine was a very non-traditional path. I am grateful for his time, guidance, sense of humor, and that he initially opened the door for me. My thoughts and prayers, though late in sharing, are with his family and the others he touched. He will be missed.

I just read of his passing and I am so heart broken. He was the first Dr to DX me with CRPS and put in a spinal cord stimulator. He told me, "I'm not giving up on you sweetie! You are too young". I was 41 at the time. He was so caring and compassionate as we're his staff at the UK Hospital. God rest his soul.

I just learned today of the passing of Dr Witt in June 2020. I was a long time patient of Dr. Witt and I still go to the Cardinal Hill Pain Institute. I would like the family to know Dr. Witt saved my life in 2004 and I am forever grateful that our paths crossed. He is and will always be a blessing in my eyes. I hope you find comfort knowing is positive impact not only for me but I am sure lots of other people lives.
My deepest sympathy

Bill was my oldest friend. We lived next door for the first 20 years of our lives. We grew up as constant companions. It was a great time and neighborhood to live in. We were able to reconnect the last 4 years and spent visits in Bill's study/library/bedroom. We talked of old times, our lives lived between our reconnection and of times to come. They were valuable times for me and hopefully Bill. I thank God for Leanne's dedication to Bill after his accident. I do not think he would have had the rehabilitation success without her. Godspeed my friend.

I was a patient of Dr. Witt for many years. After searching the country and enduring years of excruciating pain, I found Dr. Witt and he saved my life. He was a brilliant, gifted, talented doctor and person with a great sense of humor. It is only because of Dr. Witt that I can live a somewhat normal life and I truly love and appreciate him for giving me such a gift. I have mourned for Dr. Witt, for LeAnne and for all of his family since his accident and cried more times than I can count for him and his entire family. I hope the Witt family has some idea of the massive number of lives he touched and people he helped during his very interesting life that ended way too soon. My sincere sympathy to LeAnne and the entire Witt family. I share your sorrow. Joan Palmore

Even though I considered myself a seasoned medical practitioner, Dr Witt taught me more about patient care than any other peer. And, he didn't know he was teaching me. I learned through observing him as he provided phenomenal patient interaction. I will miss you Bill. Godspeed!
