Matthew Defrates Obituary

Matthew Gainesville, FL - Defrates S. Defrates It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Matthew S. Defrates, a native son. He was born June 21, 1980 on the island of Key West during the Cuban Flotilla. He died tragically on February 8th, 2025.

Matt was a light in this world, a humorous and positive personality who delighted in bringing laughter to everyone he encountered. He was raised by his mom S. Megan Defrates and dad Mark Defrates in Key West and New Orleans. In addition to his many childhood friends, he shared his childhood with his older brother Christopher Carmona, older sisters Kier (Kelly) Purdy, Ananda Lavan, baby brother Joshua Galvan and Godmother Lillian Zilpah Boyd.

His adventurous nature lead him to travel extensively throughout the Pacific, the Caribbean and Central America. Above all he loved the beach and was always happiest in the ocean.

As an adult Matt channeled his entrepreneurial spirit into a successful detailing business, GAINESVILLE FLORIDA PROS. He was, as CEO and lead retailer, always a PRO in business and in life.

After reconnecting with an old flame Karina Marin, also a Conch, he returned to the island every year to celebrate his birthday. This year his fiancée will assist his family in spreading his ashes in the waters he loved so well.

Approximately 15 years ago Matt took a significant step in life, becoming clean and sober. He was metaphorically born again and became the man we now miss so much.

Matt left behind nieces Gabrielle Carmona, Ijah Hachey, Jade Lavan, Avalon Purdy, Jazmine Galvan and was preceded in death by his dearly loved niece Kayleigh Carmona.

Also an animal lover, he left his four rescue cats bereft. RIP MATT! Forever in our hearts!
