Mavis Day Obituary
Mavis Arlene (Hunt) Day passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, in Vancouver, Washington at the age of 90. She was born on May 9, 1935, in Iowa Falls, Iowa. She was the 7th of 8 children born to Charles Dewey and Ruth (Mitchell) Hunt of Alden, Iowa.
She grew up in Alden, Iowa and attended Alden High School. On April 18, 1952, she was united in marriage to Lyle Edward Day. They made their home in Sheffield, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Larry and Helen. Mavis and Lyle were later divorced.
Mavis worked at various places in Mason City including the Arlan's Department Store, Marshall & Swift Cleaners, and Target. She moved to Vancouver, Washington in 1974 where she worked at Jantzen Beach Clothiers, Fred Meyers, Shari's Buffet, Burgerville, and Target in Washington as well as in Mason City, Iowa. She moved back to Mason City for a few years before returning to Vancouver. She was a member of Victory In Christ Free Methodist Church in Mason City and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Vancouver.
Mavis enjoyed her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She loved baking, playing all kinds of games, especially Yahtzee with her granddaughters. She also enjoyed traveling and attending events with family. Mavis loved to collect bells and spoons from various places. She was a very independent, strong and active women and loved life, living it with gusto until she could not. Unfortunately, in February 2019, she took a fall which left her wheelchair bound and bedridden; however, she still had her sense of humor during this time.
She is survived by her son, Pastor Larry Day and wife Karen of Mason City, Iowa; daughter, Helen Tenhundfeld of Vancouver, Washington; 3 granddaughters, Allison Day of Mason City, Ann (Grant) Gilson of Camas, Washington and Amber (Matthew) Andersen of Mason City, Iowa. Five great grandchildren, Olivia, Paislee, and Adelyn Andersen all of Mason City, Iowa; Abigail Wood and Hunter Gilson of Camas, Washington. One brother Russell Hunt and wife Judy of Monroe, Washington along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers: Jim (Betty) Hunt, Nathan (Norma) Hunt, and Delbert (Eloise) Hunt; sisters: Luella (Lowell) Maine, Lola (Wallace) Last, and Iola (Robert) Tollakson along with several nieces and nephews; and a special friend Mervin (Dick) Shipman.
As per her wishes, she was cremated. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, November 10, 2025, at Double Tree Hilton, Vancouver, Washington at 11:00 a.m. If you choose to send cards or messages they may be mailed to: 953 6th PL SE, Mason City, IA 50401 c/o Rev. Larry Day.
